Technology Transfer at CERN • At CERN, physicists build large machines to study high energy particles. • Sometimes the machines they make can be used by people in different ways.
Some examples of TT • The WWW was invented by physicists at CERN to communicate with one another from all over the world about projects at CERN • But people use the WWW to gather information about many things and also to communicate with one another.
Another TT example • Detectors and accelerators were used at CERN to study the properties of colliding high-speed particles. • But hospitals can use detectors and accelerators to see inside of people in order to diagnose illnesses, and also to treat illnesses by killing tumors inside of people without surgery.
Activity: • Each TT item can be put onto 2 cards. One card has physics research and development applications, and the other card has applications to the public. Students have to match up the 2 cards: i.e., match up the technology with its application. • To make this game easier, each card could be coded with the acronym of the TT on the back side. Then the task would be to see if the student can decide which is the physics R & D card and which is the TT card. Or, it could just be a case of matching by making a pair of cards, such as a pair of CRYSTAL CLEAR cards. The R & D card could have a little picture of the device and the TT card could have a picture of the application.
