  1. LINAC2 and TL Power Converters:Implementing L2 as a L4 backup 29/4/2010 LINAC2 as backup

  2. Intro • Powering up to BHZ40, LBE, LBS • Powering of BI Line • Conclusions LINAC2 as backup

  3. LINAC2 and TL power converters • The specification for changes to the existing Transfer Line is still to be finalised • Assumptions are based on ‘todays’ understanding • LINAC2 up to LTB.BHZ40, with LBE and LBS: • Today: 134 Power converters • LINAC4 (BHZ20 -> BHZ40): 34 Power converters • BI line • Today: 43 Power converters LINAC2 as backup

  4. LINAC2 Converters up to BHZ40 – B.363 Upgrade for LINAC4 (LBS, LBE) Move 1 Solenoid ( LINAC4 3MeV spare) Keep for LINAC4 (LBE, LT and LTB) Only needed for LINAC2 LINAC2 as backup

  5. LINAC2 Converters up to BHZ40 – B.355 Bending BHZ20, 30, 40 Upgrade bending power converters LINAC2 as backup

  6. BHZ20, 30 and 40 – B.355 Very long cables! 20 -> 30% of losses • Worth considering installing BHZ20, 30 and 40 in Building 363 • However we would prefer to regroup them with the L4 TL bendings for spares reasons (saves one spare) • Thus either move L4 and L2 bendings to 363 or continue to use 355 and klystron hall as currently planned LINAC2 as backup

  7. BI Powering Modifications The following systems are expected to need replacing: • BI.SMH ** (new Chicane for H- Stripping Foil) • BI[1,2,4].SMV • BI.BVT* • BI[1,2,3,4].DHZ50* • BI[1,2,3,4].DVT50* • BI[1,2,3,4].DHZ70* • BI[1,2,3,4].DVT70* • A total of 21 out of 43 existing systems are targeted for modification (plus 4 new chicane systems) *To be confirmed **Replaced by chicane LINAC2 as backup

  8. H- Chicane Powering Modifications • The BI.SMH is not required for H- operation • BI.SMH and BI[1,2,4].SMV are the same [old] systems • All will be removed to make way for the new SMV • The new chicane powering is not yet studied in detail • Should a 5ms rise time be accepted, up to 15 racks will need to be installed (where?) • Transformers will be required (in the tunnel?) • Returning back to LINAC2 operation requires • removal/disconnection of new chicane (tunnel and surface?) • re-installing BI.SMH (disturbing new SMV installation) LINAC2 as backup

  9. Concerns for maintaining LINAC2 option • Upgraded systems will almost certainly use new electronics • Control room software compatibility? • Maintaining equipment in a back-up state • Although some equipment has been consolidated, a lot of old equipment remains • Significant workload to ensure regular testing and maintenance • Systems used by LINAC2 would not be available for spares LINAC2 as backup

  10. Conclusion • It is technically possible to return powering to a LINAC2 configuration • In general new powering is an improvement in capability from existing systems (assumes we do not re-install ‘old’ equipment) • However significant maintenance issue for dormant equipment • Most problems will come from the BI line – note that the integration of this has not been studied in detail • BI line changes could probably be implemented in ~2 months if all technical issues are resolved • Software modifications would be required for upgraded/modified equipment • Access to some equipment for spares is blocked if LINAC2 backup is maintained • Potential benefits in locating bending powering in b.363 if space is made available LINAC2 as backup
