  2. What content will be covered? • Unit I Narrative Texts (Fiction and Literary Nonfiction) • Unit II Literary Analysis (Novel, Drama, Poetry) • Unit III Informational Texts • Unit IV Fiction • Unit V Informational Texts (Persuasive and Expository) • Unit VI Research • STAAR Test: May 11, 2020

What resources will we use? • Pearson-My Perspectives, Grade 6 – our main textbook, containing reading and writing selections of various genres with comprehension, vocabulary, and writing activities. • Springboard – a curriculum developed by Collegeboard (the creators of the SAT college entrance exam). It is designed to prepare students for AP courses in high school and for success on the SAT.

  4. What will we be reading? I am sensitive to having appropriate reading material in my classroom library, however what is considered “appropriate” may vary from one parent to another.  Some parents do not mind their child reading Stephen King; other parents object to the horror genre.  Please be aware that the selections in my classroom library, just like any public or school library, range from elementary-level to high school-level reading materials.  I ask you to remain aware throughout the year of the books your child has chosen to read and assist in gauging appropriateness.

  5. Materials Needed for Reading • 2 composition notebooks • Pens(blue or black)/pencils • novel • agenda

  6. Reading Students are required to: Read a minimum of 20 minutes at home every day. Although we will do about 10-15 minutes in class each day, that does not count toward their 20 minutes.

  7. Grading • Grading Scale: 10% Homework 40% Tests, Projects, Essays 50% Classwork and Quizzes • Grades will be given for: • Classwork/Homework • Reading Log and/ or Reading Response Sheet • Book Report Projects • Vocabulary Activities • Tests/Quizzes • Other class assignments

  8. On-going Assignments • Students are required to: • Complete one Reading project every 6 weeks outside of class. • Work on reading outside of class. • Practice strategies taught in class. • Complete additional work as assigned.

  9. Setting them up for SUCCESS! Tests and Major Grades: Students have an opportunity to retest if their original test grade was a failing grade (69 or below). Retesting will take place during tutorials. The two test grades will be averaged together . It is also the teacher’s option to provide an alternative or oral assessment.Late Work Policy: Late homework will not be accepted unless the student is absent. Late work due to illness can be submitted with one additional day extension per day missed. It is the responsibility of the student to get their absent work when they return to school. I would suggest that they plan to attend tutorials to get the missed work when they return. Late work this is not home work will be accepted with a 10 point per day reduction of the grade.

  10. What happens if my son/daughter needs extra help? • If a student needs to attend tutorials with me for make up work or extra help, I will be available on Wednesdays 4-4:30. • Feel free to contact me if there are any questions or concerns throughout the year. The easiest method is by e-mail, but you can also leave me a phone message.

  11. How Can You Help? • Monitor parent/student connect. • Monitor the agenda daily. • Read and write with your child at home. • Ask them to tell you about the book they are reading. • Talk to them about what you are reading.

  13. Classroom Wish List • Tissues, paper towels, hand sanitizer • Books, books and more books • There will be an ongoing list of books that the students would like added to our classroom library. I will frequently update a list on my website, so please feel free to pull books titles from that list. • We will be placing Scholastic Orders monthly beginning the end of September. When the parents place orders, we will earn class points. I use those points to order additional class books.
