I Tools for Seeing a. Microscope: Compound Light – tube, lenses and light are used to magnify and view small objects. b. Electron Microscope – passes electrons (negative charges) through things. c. CT or CaT scan – x-rays take pictures at different angles. d. MRI – Magnets in short bursts take “slice” pictures.
II Tools for Thinking • Computers – create graphs, store information and enhance research. • Calculators – solve mathematical problems and manipulate numbers.
lll Tools for Weighing 1.Scales: a. Triple Beam Balance: weighs mass b. Digital Scale: weighs smaller masses c. Mass is how much matter or “stuff” is in an object. It is measured in grams (g) d. Weight is how much matter is in an object + the pull of gravity on that object. 1
IV Tools for measuring Temperature. 1. Thermometers: a. Read temperatures in units of Celsius or Kelvin
V Tools used to measure liquids • Graduated Cylinder: are cylindrical and measure liquid “volume” • Beaker: same as above but measures larger amounts • Volume is the space an object takes up. • Liters, milliliters
VI Tools for measuring length • Length is the distance from one point to another • Meter stick and rulers: measure length, area and cubic (cube: dice) volume • Kilometers, Meters, Centimeters and Millimeters
VII Tools to Measure Time • Timers : measure how much time has elapsed. • Seconds, minutes, hours
IIX SI units • Meter - basic unit for length/cubic volume • Liter – basic unit for measuring liquids and gases • Gram – basic unit to measure mass
