What is Science? • Science is learning about the natural world through observation and experimentation.
Science Skills • Scientists use skills such as observing, inferring, predicting, and classifying to learn about the world. Video
Observing • Observing is using one or more of your senses to gather information. • Your five senses are site, smell, hearing, taste, and touch.
Observing • How much of this picture will you be able to remember? Video
Types of Observations • There are two types of observations: • Quantitative • Qualitative
Quantitative • Quantitative observations deal with numbers and amounts. • How many squares?
Qualitative • Qualitative observations are descriptions that can’t be expressed by numbers. • Color • Shape • Features
Inferring • Inferring is explaining or interpreting your observations. • Inferences aren’t guesses, they are based on reason.
Inferring • What can you infer from this picture? Video
Predicting • Predicting means making a forecast of what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence.

Classifying • Classifying is the process of grouping together items that are alike in some way.
Classifying • Put these organisms into categories. Video
Making Models • Making models involves creating representations of complex objects or processes.
Making Models • Models help people study and understand things that are complex or that can’t be observed directly.
