  2. Jacob sent awayGenesis 27:41-28:3 What two reasons does Rebekah give for sending Jacob away? (human level and divine level?) • (1) Esau wants to kill Jacob, so Rebekah says to Jacob flee the land, go to La’ban, you can stay with my brother in Haran. • (2) Rebekah wants Jacob to leave because she wants him to stay away from the “Hittite” women because he will integrate with them and their culture – • All this maintains and preserves the covenant and covenant people of the Lord.

  3. Jacob ReturnsGenesis 32-33 What is Jacob’s “survival strategy” in meeting Esau again? Is Jacob convinced his return strategy to appease Esau has worked? Explain the strategy. STRATEGY: • Jacob tries to calm and appease Esau with wave after wave of gifts; • Jacob keeps himself behind, and behind him his dearest family, to minimize Esau’s anger and maximize safety; • He is “playing him,” as he originally did with the soup, to avert Esau’s anger.

How does it reveal Jacob’s cleverness? • Esau ultimately welcomes him and seems to forgive him – but there is always the threat of violence; • Jacob is not entirely convinced it worked: he insists that Esau keep the gifts: Esau resists, but ultimately accepts the gifts: this serves as added assurance that Esau receives some tangible compensation; • Esau wants to “leave some men” with Jacob, who refuses them: this finally gives Jacob independence from Esau’s control and allows his return.

Explain why he calls the place where it happened “Peniel.” (Gn 32: 23-33) • “Israel” means “he strives/struggles with God”; • Jacob wrestles with a mysterious “man” at the Jabbok River at night, before his return to the land of the promise – is it God? (apparently) • God Himself calls Jacob “Israel”: God is the one who has the privilege/authority of the naming of Israel (dominion) • Peniel means “the face of God.”: Jacob is amazed to encounter God face-to-face and live.
