What is the UK? • The UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, which is comprised of 4 distinct parts– England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland • The UK is smaller than the US state of Oregon • The nature of an English (wo)man • As in the US, central tendencies in the UK favor individualistic leanings; achievement and individual initiative are valued • The British tendency is toward direct, low-context speech patterns
Communication in the UK • UK media freedoms and restrictions • The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) • Ten national daily newspaper in the UK with circulation lead by the Sun • Radio and TV saturation in British homes is 100% • PR emerged as a profession in the UK in the 1930s during WWII
Similarities and Differences • The US and the UK share many of the same values and cultural similarities • London is the “center of gravity” for international PR with the Prime Meridian dividing the Eastern and Western Hemispheres which run through Greenwich (right outside of London) • Focus on media relations is taking off in different directions • Major difference in size & media consumption • Edelman NY versus Edelman London • Working for a large agency is the same in both nations • Similar day-to-day activity
