  4. My Research • The Impact of Motivation to Read and Syntactic Knowledge on Reading Comprehension in an EFL Setting • Examining 3 factors • Motivation • Grammar • Reading comprehension

  5. Background • OECD • Organization for Economic Development and cooperation • 39 countries • Best in reading? • Shanghai-China, Korea, Finland • Worst? • Brazil, Argentina, Indonesia • What about Turkey? 30th (USA – 18th) Source: Education at a glance 2011

  6. Changing Trends • 20% of Turks 55-64 years graduated from high school • 42%of Turks 25-34 years old graduated from high school • As of 2010, 82% of all eligible Turks are enrolled in High school

  7. More research • Turks enrolled in a foreign language program tend to read more (Erten, Topkaya, & Karakas, 2010) • Why don’t they read? (Arici, 2009) • Lack of parental support • Economic problems • Test-based educational system • Lack of comprehension • Lack of time • No reading habit developed

  8. Syntax and reading • SDH – Structural deficit Hypothesis (Shankweiler & Crain, 1986) • Syntax a better predictor of reading success than phonetic or lexical knowledge (Martohardjono, et al., 2005)

  9. Motivation in Second Language Learning • Intrinsic and extrinsic • Part of Self-determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000) • Instrumental and Integrative (Gardner & Lambert, 1959) • Dörnyei

  10. Motivation to Read • Reading is complicated, so motivation to read is complicated (Wigfeild & Guthrie, 1997) • The MRQ • Motivation for reading questionarre • 53 statements • 11 constructs

  11. Back to my study • 229 students • 15 years old • 10 hours of English (6 main course, 4 skills) • Various backgrounds and levels • Gave the MRQ twice • Calculated syntactical knowledge score • Calculated reading comprehension scores

  12. Contributions to reading • Motivated to read significant, but small effect size • Knowledge of grammar accounts for 40% of reading score • 10% is explained by motivation • 50% is explained by individual factors

  13. Conclusion • Reading takes motivation, grammar and vocabulary • Turks don’t hate to read • Turks are moderately motivated to read by mostly intrinsic factors • Let’s encourage this trend towards reading!

  14. The End Questions are welcome! Jerrybush1@gmail @bushjerome
