Beautiful words wonderful words Wonderful words of life
My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame But wholly lean on Jesus' name
On Christ the solid Rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand All other ground is sinking sand
When He shall come with trumpet sound O may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone Faultless to stand before the throne
On Christ the solid Rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand All other ground is sinking sand
Remember, Remain, Rescue In v. 17, Jude transitions from showing why we must contend to explaining how to contend for the faith.
Jude 17–23 17 But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, 18 that they were saying to you, “In the last time there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.”
Jude 17–23 19 These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-minded, devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.
Jude 17–23 22 And have mercy on some, who are doubting; 23 save others, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment polluted by the flesh.
Sermon in a Sentence To contend for the faith: 1) we must remember the apostles anticipated the rise of false teachers (17–19); 2) we must remain in the love of God (20–21), and 3) we must rescue those whose lives are at risk because of the influence of false teachers (22–23).
Remember, Remain, Rescue 1. We must remember the apostles anticipated the rise of false teachers (17–19).
Remember, Remain, Rescue “Remembering means that one takes to heart the words spoken, so that they are imprinted upon one’s life” (Schreiner, 477).
Remember, Remain, Rescue I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. (Acts 20:29–30)
Remember, Remain, Rescue We are not waiting for the last days; we are living in the last days.
Remember, Remain, Rescue This means churches must practice church membership.
Remember, Remain, Rescue “Satan loves to divide, rip, and tear apart. These evil emissaries follow their master and cause divisions….Lacking respect for spiritual leaders, making sport of moral conviction, and lampooning theological distinctives, they can demolish in a day what it took a decade to build” (Akin).
Remember, Remain, Rescue “The slightest violation of the divine law will bring judgments upon the Church…The Bible, the whole Bible, and nothing but the Bible is the religion of Christ’s church.” (Spurgeon)
Remember, Remain, Rescue If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. Romans 8:9
Remember, Remain, Rescue 2. We must remain in the love of God (20–21).
Remember, Remain, Rescue We must not let the certain toil of spiritual warfare rob us of God’s love.
Remember, Remain, Rescue To remain in God’s love, Jude gives us three participles – building, praying, and waiting.
Remember, Remain, Rescue First, to remain in the love of God, we must constantly build ourselves upon the foundation of our most holy faith (20).
Remember, Remain, Rescue Paul writes, “No one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Cor 3:11), and Jude says the foundation is “the most holy faith.” Both are true. We cannot build our lives on Christ unless we are building our lives on the faithrevealed in the Bible.
Remember, Remain, Rescue You cannot neglect the work of building your life on the faith and expect to know the love of God.
Remember, Remain, Rescue Second, we must pray constantly in the Spirit.
Remember, Remain, Rescue pray at all times in the Spirit, and. . .be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints Eph 6:18
Remember, Remain, Rescue Prayers in the Spirit are prayers which flow from meditation on God’s truth and are consumed with a passion for the glory of King Jesus.
