  3. Mother died in 1762 • Father died in 1772 • Inherited father’s house, looms, and workshop. • 1778 he listed his occupations as master weaver and silk merchant. Also known as type-founder • July 26, 1778 he married Claudine Boichon. • April 19, 1779 they had their only child, a son, Jean Marie.

Jacquard Loom • 1801, the Jacquard loom was invented by Jacquard. • A mechanical loom with a process of manufacturing textiles with complex patterns: brocade, damask, and matelasse. • Multiple rows of holes punched on each card and the many cards the compose the design of the textile are strung together in order. • Base on inventions by Frenchmen BalsileBouchon, Jean-Baptisle Falcon, and Jacques Vaucanson.

Importance of Jacquard loom • First machine that used punched cardsto control a sequence of operations • No computations, but an important to step in the history of computing software • The ability to change the pattern of the loom’s weave by simply changing cards was an important conceptual precursor to the development of computer program • Charles Babbage planned to used cards to store programs in his Analytical engine.
