Invention • Invented the • Made to be an easier way to weave Silk • Used punch cards so that the same pattern could be made over and over again • Was able to then mass produce his silk weavings • Punch cards where reusable and interchangeable Punch card loom
What the Machine did • Used to make fabrics • Clothes where cheaper and easier to make • The machine was now able to make more complex designs • Was able to make the complex designs at the same speed other machines made plain cloth • It could make small repeating patterns or one large design in different colors giant punch cards
Lead the way to… • Lead the way for other inventors to use his punch card • The cards allowed the machines to perform different jobs • Used by Charles Babbage’s analytical machine • Later used by Herman Hollerith by means of entering data into his census collator
Little Known Facts • At first he did not patent his machine…the city of Lyon did • Because of that he was unable to gain any profit from the sale and use of the machine • Finally he was given a state pension from the Emperor Napoleon allowing him to gain money from his machine
More Facts • Was son of silk weaver. Later that became his profanation before inventing • By the time of his death, his loom was almost universally used in the weaving industry • Was awarded the bronze medal for his model at the Industrial Exposition at Paris in 1801
