Slope as Rate of Change Lab

Investigate if a line's slope affects object speed, presenting a structured lab report with hypothesis, experiment plan, data collection, analysis, and conclusion based on evidence gathered. Create tables, graphs, track, data collection, and lab report in a group to complete the experiment successfully. Materials required: foam board, meter stick, physics stand, pipe cleaners, scotch tape, straight pins, stopwatch, graph paper, notebook paper, IMJ app, chromebook, pencil, post-it notes, post-it tabs, streamers.

  1. Slope as Rate of Change Lab Question: Does the slope of a line directly affect the speed of an item traveling the line? Hypothesis: If____________________then______________. Experiment: (Plan it! define variables, state what you are testing and how you are going to test it. A repeatable procedure). Data Collection: (record data in a useable format) Data Analysis: (What does your data mean?) Conclusion: (Proof and reflection) Based on the data..________________ we have evidence to prove our hypothesis (restate hypothesis) is __________(correct or not correct).

  2. In your small group: You have a job: Project Manager: Create the Lab Report, keep the group on task, goal is to complete lab on-time. Data Manager: Create tables and graphs to collect the data and put it in a useable format. Engineer: Build the track for the object to travel. Needs to be movable, straight, and accurate to a point. Data Collector: Collect and communicate data to the Data Manager. (timer, point locations, etc.)

  3. Supply List: -foam board grid -meter stick -physics stand -pipe cleaners -scotch tape -straight pins -stop watch -graph paper -notebook paper -IMJ -chrome book -pencil -post-it notes -post-it tabs -streamers -lab report
