Job Search Components Assess your skills and interests Identify potential employers and job openings Look for similar employers Prepare and submit targeted application documents Follow up with employers/contacts Prepare for interviews (first three modules of the M.Eng. Career Curriculum) Talk with people in industry (Professional Networking) Discuss your job search with a your M.Eng./MPS Director or career advisor

  7. Follow-up with Employers (and other contacts) Students gather many business cards at different events but few follow up with the potential contacts FOLLOW UP!

  8. Prepare for Interviews Feedback from employers: Answer the questions Explain WHY you want the job Explain WHY you are a good fit Have good questions for us Research the industry and organization PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

  12. Timing Your Response • Timeline for Responding • Cornell provides employers with guidelines for extending offers to students and requiring responses. October 15 is the earliest deadline. • Delaying Offers • What if you receive an offer, but would still like to explore other opportunities?

Delaying Your Response Things to consider: • When did the employer say they want a decision? • What information will you need to gather to make the decision? • How much more time would you like? • What will you do with that time? • How will you respond if the employer isn’t willing to give you more time?

Job Offers & Decision Making • Consult: • Family/Other confidants • Career Center • Mentors/Advisors • Remember: • Ask for time if needed, don’t accept a job you don’t want • A verbal accept is an accept, It’s a small world • Once you accept an offer, remove your application from other postings; stop searching • Consider/Revisit: • Values and interests • Personal & Family concerns • Know/Have in Writing: • Salary • Benefits • Start Date
