  2. Our Vision – We Change Lives! • Our common CfE Understanding • Skills for learning life and work • S5 most important year for qualifications. S4 exams taken “en route”. • Success or failure hangs on a positive experience in S3.

  3. Traditional S3 Curriculum – 30 period week • English and Maths - 4 periods per wk • PE (2), RE, PSE • 6 Subjects 3 periods per wk

  4. Our hinge CfE question • “Why do youngsters have do the same amount for each subject whether it is their first choice of their last?” ANSWER • Ease of timetabling • Equal treatment for all subjects

  5. A Radical Thought • How can we arrange for youngsters to do more of the subjects they enjoy!

  6. The Viewforth S3 model – 35 period week • English and Maths 4 periods per wk • SE and RE get 1 period • 5 Columns of 3 periods - Core • 5 Columns of 2 periods – Enrichment • One column reserved for Duke of Edinburgh or ASDAN Key Steps Awards, XL

  7. Breadth and Depth in S3 at Viewforth • Pupils can do the SAME subject in the core or enrichment columns or in BOTH • 2, 3,5 or 6 periods/week of the SAME subject! • Pupils will experience between 11 and 16 subjects per week. • Fast Track to Highers in S4

  8. S3 Leads to INTEGRATED senior phase • Five Columns of 6 periods and 1 of 5 • Highers and Advanced Highers get 6 periods • N5 and N4 courses 5 Periods

  13. Preparing for S3 via S1 and S2 • ALL S1 pupils do 2 pds ASDAN Key steps awards Identity, Citizenship Personal Finance, Enterprise • ALL S2 Pupils do 2 Pds ASDAN Bronze Award World of Work, Community, Number Handling, Beliefs and Values etc

  14. Reflect - Successes • Better prepared for the Senior Phase • Attainment Raised? • Less disruption in S3 and S4 classes • More pupils staying on in S5 & S6 • Pupils more engaged in learning • Parents more involved • More Positive destinations??? • A TIRED but HAPPY staff.

  15. Reflect – More Work required! • Many Areas • Does S3 support Integrated S4/5/6? • IDL • L, N, & HWB for All • Post school transitions • Community Interfacing • ???

  16. Speculate • Pupils take S4 qualifications en-route to main ones in S5. • More pupils will return for S5 &S6 • How can senior pupils do more of what they enjoy (or need)? • Can 3+3 become (1+2)+(2+1)?
