Create and Motivate! The student we are attempting to engage needs constant stimulation. They are not the student of past, they are the…..
……..MILLENIUM GENERATION WHO are the MILLENIALS???? •Children of late boomers and early GenXers •“Babies on Board” “Have You Hugged Your Child Today” sixth graders of the early Clinton years • Teens of Columbine,911, and terrorism •Nurtured, entitiled, want to experience everything •Prefer team concepts rather than 1-1 •Celebrate diversity, high expectations, re-write rules, special , unique, important
Growing Up “Messages” •Be smart – you are special (Nickelodeon, Baby Gap, Sports Illustrated for Kids) •Leave no one behind (taught to be inclusive and tolerant of other religions and sexual orientations) •Connect 24/7 (learned to be interdependent-on family, friends, and teachers) •Achieve now! (right college, right preschool) •Serve your community – think of the greater good
SHELTERED, NURTRED ENTITLED Parents drove around with Baby on Board signs, kids were baby monitored, overprotected
PRESSURED WE WANT THEM INVOLVED IN EVERYTHING They are pushed to study hard They are pushed to succeed They are pushed to attend college They are pushed to choose careers that “pay off” nicely
OTHER CHARACTERISTICS HAVE NEVER BEEN WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY Technology and Multitasking are a way of life Trial and error is the key learning strategy (Nintendo logic) They are used to bits and bytes, flash and color They are racially and ethnically diverse They want their parents involved (really involved)
Attracting, Teaching, Engaging Course Description ARE YOU SHOWING THE LIGHT OR ARE YOU SCARING THEM AWAY….?
Health Occupations Past Course Description ...it’s a wonder we had any enrollment!
•Curriculum is mandated by the NYS Dept. of Health, with regulations that determine eligibility for certification. Classroom instruction includes infection control, basic nursing skills, body structure and function, the job seeking process, and computer skills related to the nurse aide documentation in the health care industry. Class time will be set aside to meet for required clinical hours (108) in a skilled nursing facility. Upon successful completion of this program the student is qualified to test for state certification. The course instructor is the only authorized agent to recommend a student for testing. If the course instructor feels that the student should not be recommended for testing, a letter will be placed in the students file with the reasons for the decision. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Principles of Health Occupations Course 775 (Can not be taken simultaneously). Course Requirements: Must be in good physical health with an updated physical exam documented in the last year and up to date on all immunizations (per NYS Ed. Law 2164 and NYS Dept. of Health Regulations Title: Section 766.11). Must be eligible to take State Certification exam by possessing a valid original social security card, photo id, and be able to read at a 6th grade reading level. 98% classroom attendance is required. Students can miss up to 7 hours of instruction. If the student misses over 7 hours, he/she is dropped from the course. 100% Clinical attendance is required. If the student misses the first clinical session, he/she is automatically dropped from the course. Note: State certification mandates a designated hour requirement as stated above. Student to teacher ratio for clinical is 10:01. Students who attend this program MUST have excellent attendance; have mature and responsible behavior, dedication to the residents (patients) assigned to the clinical area, and able to follow directions. Clinical rotation involves exposure and hands-on training with residents in a long term care facility. The student will be exposed to a variety of sights, sounds, and smells that require a mature approach and must have no physical barriers to caring for the resident population. IF THE INSTRUCTOR OBSERVES ANY BEHAVIOR OR SAFETY ISSUES IN THE FACILITY, THIS WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE REMOVAL FROM THE PROGRAM.
TIME TO CHANGE •Create description like advertisement •Target Millenniums •Use action words •Course Name change…now is the time to do it! •Show them the Light….don’t scare them away!
REMEMBER…. They are not like us….. •They want to independent, but to like structure •They like to have interaction, challenges •They have high expectations •They want to know what is in it for them…will it meet their expectations •They want to see the future, what will this mean for life •Give them the light at the end of the tunnel………
Are we limited by challenges? Activity: As a teacher…. If you had to pick one word answer to define your challenges that limit creativity in classroom and/or clinical, what would that be?
Limitations Defined Program hours Student motivation Clinical Getting everything done in order to test Limited class time
Creativity through Collaboration Teamwork is the essence of healthcare. Through collaboration, the student can get a variety of knowledge, enhance skills, and increase motivation.
Who should I collaborate with? The answer for collaboration is within the lesson plan and curriculum. This is where we began………………….
