Motivation • Growing interest in educational programs in Ocean Energy • The EUREC contact to the European Ocean Energy Association (EU - OEA) for possible interest from universities in organizing a Specialisation Modulus in OE for the European Master in Renewable Energy (EUREC) • IST presented to EUREC ideas for a Specialisation Modulus in Ocean Energy in: • EUREC meeting in Bilbao in December 2009 • EUREC Master Steering Committee in Brussels in March 2010 • EUREC Master Steering Committee in Brussels in June 2011 • Proposed Syllabus: Discussed and conditionally approved in the EUREC Master Steering Committee in Brussels in November 2011. • 1stEUREC Specialisation Course in Ocean Energy at IST in 2nd Semester 2012-2013.

Contents: • Introduction to the ocean environment • Ocean surface waves • Ocean tidal currents • Site selection and characterization for ocean energy systems • Student learning outcomes: • Develop an understanding of the physical mechanisms in the ocean which are on the basis of the generation of surface waves, tides and currents, and their effects. • be familiar with the statistical description of waves and currents. • use the statistical information to make evaluation of the energy resource. • use of GIS in site selection characterization. Contents: • Wave energy systems • Marine current turbines • Other types of ocean energy systems • Student learning outcomes: • become familiar with the linear hydrodynamic theory of wave energy systems. • become familiar with the hydrodynamic theory of marine current turbines (BEM). • be introduced to advanced numerical hydrodynamic modelling of wave and current systems and control simulation. • be introduced to experimental testing and monitoring of OE systems. • get a basic knowledge of other forms of ocean energy and their systems as OTEC and salinity gradients. Contents: • Power take-off systems: Air turbines, hydraulic turbines, hydraulic equipment, electrical generation • Electrical connection systems • Mooring and anchoring systems • Operation and maintenance of ocean energy devices • Offshore electrical grid • Offshore operations • Maritime safety issues • Farm layout • Student learning outcomes: • become familiar with the electro-mechanical equipment used in wave energy systems and marine current turbines, offshore wind systems, the offshore electrical grid and connection systems. • get basic knowledge on the requirements to deploy, operate and maintain the wave and current energy systems both isolated and in arrays The Specialisation Modulus in OE EUROPEAN MASTER IN RENEWABLE ENERGY- Specialisation in OE at IST Ocean Energy Systems Technologies: 7.5 ECTS

Contents: • Offshore wind resource • Offshore wind systems and technology • Offshore wind farms • Student learning outcomes: • understand the nature of the wind energy resource offshore and the differences to the wind energy resource onshore; • become familiar with the aerodynamics of offshore wind turbines; • understand the type of loads that the turbine and turbine structures are subject to; • understand the main problems related to the turbine control; •  get a basic understanding of the problems involved in offshore wind farm design. Contents: • Economic analysis:Cost, financing mechanisms and economic evaluation, life-cycle assessment • Policy issues:Socio-economic impacts, licensing and permitting • Environmental impact assessment • Student learning outcomes: • become familiar with the basic economic analysis of ocean energy systems including the cost, financing and economic evaluation. • get basic knowledge on the general policy issues regarding ocean energy systems and more detailed knowledge on the licensing and permitting procedures for installation of OE systems and enabling mechanisms as funding, feed-in tariffs and tax incentives. • Be able to perform simple environmental impact studies for OE systems The Specialisation Modulus in OE EUROPEAN MASTER IN RENEWABLE ENERGY- Specialisation in OE at IST Economics, Policy and Environment: 4.5 ECTS

The Specialisation Modulus in OE EUROPEAN MASTER IN RENEWABLE ENERGY- Specialisation in OE at IST Project: 6 ECTS (or 3 ECTS with Offshore Wind Modulus)

  15. Laboratory OER-1: Surface Ocean Waves: • Wave Flume of the Civil Engineering Department of IST: Characterization of systems of regular and irregular 2D waves. Energy spectra: Duration 3 h. MCOES-1: Wave energy systems: • Wave Flume of the Civil Engineering Department of IST: Characterization of a floating body response RAO in a system of regular 2D waves: Duration 3 h. OEST-1 Mechanical and Electrical Equipment: • a) Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering Department of IST: Testing of an air turbine for use in OWC systems: Duration 3 h. • b)Electrical Machinery Laboratory of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of IST: laboratory practice on electrical generators: Duration 3 h.
