Who is KEK? • KEK stands for • K: 高: Kou : High • E: エネルギー: Enerugi : Energy : Energie(German) • K:加速器研究機構: KasokukiKennkyuukikou : Accelerator Research Organization • KEK is an Inter-University Research Corporation • 100% Government funded (MEXT) “agency” • We are not government employees anymore, but the same regulations are applied • Research in multi-disciplines • HEP, Nuclear Phys., Material science, Life science and etc. • More than 100 foreign researchers are staying at KEK always • Search “3050801 Japan” on google map

KEK Computing Research Center • Missions on deployment, operation, research and development: all of the works related ICT • Only 26 staff positions including secretaries • Human resource efficient • Faculty system as well as other divisions of KEK • Procurement model • Purchase services not hardware for 4-6 years • Operations are done by vendors mostly • New system has been in production at 13:00 JST on September 1st (JST) • Thank IBM for their efforts a lot

  9. Tsukuba, the city of history and science • Tsukuba area was well populated since long years ago • Center of the local government in 7th century • Mt. Tsukuba(877m), the mountain of love • The twin peaks symbolize the couple of Gods • Wedding ceremony at the shrine is popular • “Utagaki” was held once a year at the shrine in ancient • People exchange short love songs randomly to find their partners in competitive behavior • “Like the Minano River surging from the peak of Mt. Tsukuba Science City • The artificially designed/built city for national universities(2) and national research institutions (32) including JAXA, KEK and so on • Construction started in 1968 and ended in 1985 • 210K+ population in City of Tsukuba • 20K+ students • 36K+ employees in the universities and institutions • 8K+ PhDs • 5K visiting foreign researchers a year(more than 2 weeks stay) • Rapid train service between Akihabara(Tokyo) and Tsukuba since 2005 • 45 min by the fastest service

Transportation from the airports • Three international airports near-by (TYO) • Nariata (HND) (~60km) • Haneda (NRT) (~80km) • Ibaraki <- just for LCCs • From Narita • Taxi 20K~30K JPY (~100JPY/USD) • Airport bus for Tsukuba (55~70min) 2,200JPY • Easy but not frequent, almost every hour • Train (~1.5hours) 1,940JPY • Frequent but two changes • Haneda • Taxi 30K~40K JPY • Airport bus for Tsukuba (1.5~2 hours) 1,850JPY • Easy but not frequent every 90min • Train (1.5+ hours) 1,840JPY • Frequent but two changes • Car rentals • Drive the same side as UK, Australia, NZ and etc. • Don’t forget to bring your international drivers license with the original together • English language GPS navigation is available • google map almost works but ignores traffic rules sometimes

Accommodations • Hotels in Tsukuba are much cheaper than NYC • No gorgeous hotels • Rooms are narrower, but cleaner • The conference management company has the license of a travel agency • You will be accommodated in the hotels near the Tsukuba station • Transportation to/from KEK will be provided daily from/to the hotels • Also public bus service is available • KEK has cheaper on-site housing options, but we do not offer them this time • Need to pay for a taxi after social events

Safety information • Criminal rates are lower in all over Japan • Possession of guns is not allowed • Civilian possessions: 0.6 firearms per 100 people in Japan while 101.5 in US, 30.3 in Germany, 31.2 in France and 6.7 in UK • Natural disasters • Who knows? • Chance on feeling a smaller scale earthquake • The end of typhoon season (October) • Foods • All of the foods from Fukushima are screened • Only ND (Not Detected) foods are sold (less than salts in Bq/Kg) • Many of restaurants are not yet aware well the necessity on paying more attention to food allergies • People who have the allergy on wheats must pay more attention • Basic seasonings such as “shoyu” and “miso” often made from wheats(not always) • There are a few restaurants that offer menu for vegetarian or Halal menu

Travel tips in Japan • No tip! : There is no tipping custom • Service fee is always included in your bill at restaurants, hotels and everywhere even if not noted • Pay at cashers at restaurants and café otherwise requested • Not be scared of robotic toiletsnot only Gundom! • People learn English in school, but not so fluent • Emulate Italian English for better understandings • Add a vowel after every consonants • E.g. Thisuisu a pen. • Write down or show your phone/tablet screen • Still cash oriented • Chain stores and super markets likely take credit cards • Only 3 ATMs accept foreign credit cards around the Tsukuba station • Tsukuba Post Office, Seibu and Benimaru stores • All of Post Offices and Seven Eleven stores in Japan have ATMs that accept foreign card • Mobile phones • Radio bands are different from countries by countries • Phones from T-mobile US may not work even if you buy a SIM card in Japan • SIM free iPhones will work with prepaid SIMs sold at the airports • Check you phone at https://www.frequencycheck.com/

Tsukuba is an option • 15min bus ride and hiking • Downscale Nikko • Shrines, temples and the nature

  19. Organizations • Koichi Murakami leads the local organizer team • 4 staffs are assigned (in part time) • We hire a conference management company • They do almost all for us • They work for the HEPIX meeting at the same time
