  1. Blogging at CIMSS Scott Lindstrom and Scott Bachmeier

  2. Why Blogs? • Allows the creation of an easily-searchable library of cases to use for satellite training • High-quality blogs are an effective tool for public outreach

  3. Different Blogs • http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog • CIMSS Satellite Blog: describes interesting events, high impact events, or unusual events with a focus on Satellite imagery and how that imagery helps understand the event • http://fusedfog.ssec.wisc.edu • GOES-R Fog Product Examples: focuses on new fog detection products developed for GOES-R (the next-generation satellite to be launched in 2015) • http://pyrocb.ssec.wisc.edu • PyroCb: describes examples of the development of pyrocumulonimbus clouds associated with large, very hot fires

  4. Different ‘types’ of Blog Posts • A high-impact weather event is occurring right now (or has occurred very recently), and here are some satellite images that help describe it • CIMSS has developed new satellite-based products that can help forecasters, and here are some examples of how they can be used • Something has gone wrong with a satellite • There’s a new satellite up there!

  5. High Impact Weather Event Examples Eruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull (2010) that curtailed air travel over the North Atlantic and Europe Bonus: Highlighted Mike Pavolonis’ automated volcanic ash detection algorithms that were developed at CIMSS.

  6. High Impact Weather Event Examples A series of blog posts on Hurricane Sandy (2012) Bonus: Used Suomi NPP VIIRS Day/Night Band imagery (which was downloaded and processed at CIMSS) Bonus #2: GOES-14 SRSO-R (1-minute interval) data was incorporated into the blog post

  7. High Impact Weather Event Examples Joplin EF-5 Tornado (2011) Bonus: Showed examples of convetive Cloud-Top Cooling Rate and Overshooting Top detection, two algorithms developed at CIMSS

  8. High Impact Weather Event Examples Did weather play a role in the disappearance of Air France Flight 447 over the Atlantic Ocean? (2010)

  9. New Product Blog Post Examples (1) Detection of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL), which plays a role in the suppression of Tropical Storm development (2) MIMIC Total Precipitable Water, which shows regions of abundant moisture and important features such as atmospheric rivers Both products were developed at CIMSS

  10. New Product Blog Post Examples NOAA/CIMSS ProbSevere product, which blends Satellite data with Radar data and Numerical model fields

  11. Satellite Error Blog Post Examples GOES-13 suffered an anomaly when it was hit by a micro-meteor. A series of blog posts described the recovery, and provided links to NESDIS posts on the event

  12. Satellite Error Blog Post Examples GOES-13 Sounder filter wheel timing issues led to pixel drop-outs. Blog posts identified and described the problem - this one discussed the solution that was implemented

  13. Satellite Error Blog Post Examples GOES-15 Navigation errors near satellite “Eclipse” were described. Again, provided links back to NESDIS on how the error occurred, and when the fix occurred

  14. Satellite Error Blog Post Examples GOES-15 Calibration errors in the Water Vapor channel only (in 2012)

  15. New Satellite Blog Post Examples GOES-15 launched, first full disk visible image available! Similar posts for most new satellites (for example, Suomi NPP)

  16. Statistics for CIMSS Satellite Blog • 1400 posts since August 2006 • ‘Usually’ 10-15 posts monthly. • Around 1.3M hits each month. (9.1 M so far in 2014) • ‘Busiest’ month: November 2013: 2.2M hits! • Terabytes of data downloaded monthly from the server (June 2013: 10.1 Tb downloaded!)

  17. Bookmarks! • http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog • http://fusedfog.ssec.wisc.edu • http://pyrocb.ssec.wisc.edu • Questions? scottl@ssec.wisc.edu / scottb@ssec.wisc.edu
