Direct object pronouns Spanish 1
All about “it” • How do you say “it” in Spanish? • When “it” is the subject of a sentence, no word is used. It is simply implied by the verb. • Ejemplo: • I like this book. It is interesting. • Me gusta este libro. Es interesante. The word “es” replaces “it is”
All about “it” What happens when “it” is not the subject, but the direct object? Well, what’s a direct object? • A direct object is the part of a sentence that receives the action of the verb. It is not the subject!
Ejemplo: I read the book. SUBJECT VERB DIRECT OBJECT So what is being read? The book.
Practice Identify the direct objects in the following sentences… • Yocomo el bistec. • Túcompras los libros. • Ellossacan la basura. • Nosotroshacemos la cama. • Habloespañol. Not all sentences have direct objects. Ex: I read. I am happy. I run across the field.
Direct object pronouns So what happens when you want to replace the direct object with a more generic word? You use a pronoun!! Do you remember subject pronouns?
DOP’s… So let’s use the sentence “I read the book.” What could we say to replace “the book”? IT! We would say, “I read it.” It is the direct object pronoun, or “DOP”
DOP’S in español There are 4 DOP’s in Spanish: MS, FS, MP, FP “Lo” – (libro, césped, comedor) “La” – (mesa, basura, silla) “Los” – (platos, quehaceres, bolígrafos) “Las” – (manzanas, camas, puertas) Yoleo el libro I read the book Yo lo leo I read it In Spanish, the DOP goes before the conjugated verb.
Practice Change the direct objects to DOP’s… • Yopongo la mesa. • Ella saca la basura. • Nosotros hacemoslas camas. • Elloslavan los platos. • Túarreglas el cuarto. Yo la pongo. Ella la saca. Nosotros las hacemos. Ellos los lavan. Tú lo arreglas.
Conjugated verbs + infinitives • Whenever you have a conjugated verb + an infinitive like “I’m going to washthem” or “He has to doit”, the DOP can be added to the end of the infinitive… Ex: Los voy a lavar I’m going to wash them. Voy a lavarlos I’m going to wash them. This ONLY works if there is a conjugated verb AND an infinitive. ***To make it easier, you can always put the DOP before the conjugated verb…you can never go wrong doing that.
Practice • We sing them. (Las canciones) • They speak it. (Español) • I do it. (La tarea) • You remember it. (El cuento) • She plays them. (los deportes) • You have to eat them. (lasnaranjas) Nosotros las cantamos. Ellos lo hablan. Yo la hago. Tú lo recuerdas. Ella los juega. Tú las tienes que comer / Tú tienes que comerlas.
