Why we are here • We feel that an improvement of at least a factor of 2 can be achieved at BNL, • with reasonable cost • and reasonable running time • Let’s look at where we came from: B. Lee Roberts, g22 Meeting16June 2004

Today with e+e- based theory: All E821 results were obtained with a “blind” analysis. B. Lee Roberts, g22 Meeting16June 2004
systematic errors B. Lee Roberts, g22 Meeting16June 2004
In March DH,JM,LR,WM went to DOE/NSF • We presented what we have done in E821 • We discussed the proposal to improve on aμ down to 0.25 ppm • Bill Marciano gave a strong physics argument of why 0.25 is a well motivated goal. • Our argument was that with modest improvements we could reach this goal. Other hadronic improvements: • BaBar is also using radiative return. The ISR photon is very hard. They have lots of data, but have to replace their muon chambers. • Novosibirsk is upgrading the machine and the detector. B. Lee Roberts, g22 Meeting16June 2004
Experimental Improvements • use 5.2 πGeV beam and take backward μ decays. • improve ωa and ωp systematic errors to 0.1 ppm. • open the inflector ends. • improve the kicker? B. Lee Roberts, g22 Meeting16June 2004
present beamline B. Lee Roberts, g22 Meeting16June 2004
Inflector gain = 1.75 for open ends B. Lee Roberts, g22 Meeting16June 2004
kicker we never saw this efficiency turn over…. can we improve the storage rate by an additional kicker? B. Lee Roberts, g22 Meeting16June 2004
detectors/electroincs • can we improve the detectors? • or use the Q method? • New electronics • muLaN electronics B. Lee Roberts, g22 Meeting16June 2004
Welcome to each of you • We have many challenges to deal with to reach the new goal. B. Lee Roberts, g22 Meeting16June 2004
