Adolf Hitler Background Information - Born on April 20th 1889 in Austria • Wanted to become an Artist • Failed to gain admittance to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna twice - In 1913 moved to Munich to join the German Army Menu
Rise to Power • After the German Defeat in WWI, Hitler discovered that he was a powerful public speaker. • In 1920 Hitler joined the Nazi party. • In 1921 he became the chairman of the party, giving him dictatorial powers. • In 1923 Hitler was put in jail for trying to overthrow the current government. Rise to Power (cont.) • After he got out of jail, Hitler tried to rebuild the party. • In 1930 the Nazi party gained a substantial amount of the vote in the election. • He used propaganda and power to help the Nazi party gain followers. Menu
Beliefs and Leadership Style Leadership Style Beliefs • Dictatorship • Looked to have control over the masses • The people in the country loved him because he lead them out of their economic depression. • While in jail, he wrote the book Mein Kampf , meaning my struggle. • Believed in Darwinism- survival of the fittest • He thought that German people were of the perfect race and that race was threatened by the Jewish population. Things Done During the War • Broke the treaty of Versailles • 1940 troops took over Norway and Denmark • Later that year they took over the Netherlands, France, and Belgium • Ordered the murder of over six million Jews Menu
Things Done After the War • Hitler killed himself towards the end of the war, so he didn’t accomplish anything after the war was over Menu

Josef Stalin Menu
Josef Stalin • Born in Gori, Georgia on December 21,1879. • Growing up in Russia his family was poor. • In 1899 he was expelled from the Tiflis Theological Seminary for trying to convert fellow students to Marxism. • In 1901 he joined the Social Democratic Labor Party. Menu
Background • April 18, 1902, Stalin was arrested for coordinating an attack on an industrial plant in Russia. • After he was let out of jail he was deported to Siberia. • In 1904 Stalin escaped Siberia and went back to planning attacks in Tiflis. Menu
Rise to Power • During this time in Russia, Vladimir Lenin was in control of the country. • In 1917 Lenin promoted Stalin to Commissioner of Nationalities. • This position left him in control of the non-Russian population. Menu
Rise to Power (Cont.) • Stalin gained complete power of the country through a series of revolutions in Russia. Menu
Leadership Style and Beliefs Leadership Style Beliefs • Ruled his country by instilling fear in the citizens of Russia. • Used terror to strike fear into the hearts of the people he ruled. • Since Russia was communist he was in complete control of the country. • Russia was a communist country, but formed an alliance with the rest of anti-fascist countries in Europe. • He did this in hopes that Germany wouldn’t want to fight against a unified Europe. Things Done After the War • The red army ended the war controlling most of what had been the Axis Countries. • After the war Russia was mainly concerned with spreading communism around the world. • Stalin died on March 1, 1953. Menu

Franklin D. Roosevelt • Born in 1882 at Hyde Park, New York. • He attended Harvard University and went to Columbia Law School. • FDR married his wife Eleanor Roosevelt on St. Patrick’s Day in 1905. • Became a New York Senator in 1910. Menu
Rise to Power • President Wilson appointed him the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. • In 1920 Roosevelt was the Democratic nominee for Vice president. • In 1928 Roosevelt became the Governor of New York. • He was elected the 32nd president of the USA in 1932. Menu
Things Done While in Office • Only president ever elected to four terms in office. • Put many plans into action that helped to bring the United States out of the Great Depression. • After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, he got the nation ready for a global war. Menu
Things Done During the War • He spent much of his time during the war planning out the United Nations because he thought that it would prevent future conflicts. • President Roosevelt died on April 12th 1945, just before the end of the war. Menu

Harry Truman Menu
Harry Truman • Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri in 1884. • He was a prosperous farmer growing up in Independence, Missouri. • Served in WWI as a captain in the Field Artillery. • When he returned he married Elizabeth Virginia Wallace. Menu
Rise to Power • Truman was elected a judge of Jackson County Court in 1922 • In 1934 he went on to become a United States Senator. • He was the vice president for F.D.R., and took over for him after he died in office. Menu
Things Done While in Office • After the Japanese refused to surrender, Truman ordered the dropping of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, two cities devoted to war work. • The Japanese surrendered shortly after. • Oversaw the signing of the United nations Charter. Menu
Things Done After the War • He followed Roosevelt’s policies, and created some new ones of his own. • Proposed the expansion of Social Security. • He served one more term in office then decided to retire to Independence in 1953 • He died on December 26, 1972. Menu

Winston Churchill • Born on November 30, 1874 at Blenheim Place in Oxfordshire, England. • He attended the Royal Military College before starting his military career. • After his military service he joined the Liberal Party in 1904. Menu
Rise to Power • In 1908 he joined the Cabinet as President of the Board of Trade, becoming home secretary in 1910. • He rejoined the army during WWI, serving on the Western Front. • In 1917, he went back to working for the government as the minister of munitions. Menu
