The Daily Life in Ancient Egypt! • Most families have a husband, a wife, and children • A normal meal for a farmer’s family is bread, meat, and beer. • A normal meal for a rich family is the finest meats, breads, cakes, wine, figs, and dates. • An average husband does all of the hard labor, and the wife does the housework (cooked, cleaned, and watched the children) • Houses are made of dried mud and built high to escape the Nile’s yearly flooding. • When the summer came around, the Egyptians sleep on the roofs of their houses to get away from the heat.

  3. The Daily Life in Ancient Egypt! • Inside the homes people have little furniture. Usually they only had small stools and jewelry. • A rich man wears a kilt out of fine linen and sandals of leather. • A farmer wears a kilt of coarse linen with reed sandals. • Everyone, whether rich or poor wears perfume and makeup. • Wealthy women wear jewels and beads on their dresses and wealthy men wear decorative robes, with wigs on special occasions.

  4. The Daily Life in Ancient Egypt! • There are no girls in a planned school. So they are often taught at home. • Boys go to school to learn how to read, write, and do mathematics. • In Egypt girls are expected to have a husband at the age of twelve.

TheDaily Life in Ancient Egypt! • Many people grow their own food and trade in the villages for goods that they can not produce. • Pharaohs have several wives to help them with house duties that they can’t carry out with only one wife. • Sanitation is determined by what social class you fall in. • If you come to Egypt, you can explore and tour the houses, belongings, and everyday places that the people of Egypt go to!

Pyramids in Ancient Egypt! • On the plateau of Giza 2,300,000 blocks of stone were used to make the Great Pyramid. • It weighed about nine tons. • Pharaohs lived in palaces and temples built to honor them and their ancestors. • King Khufu “Cheops” was the foreman of pyramid building. • They look like giant, three dimensional triangles.

Pyramids in Ancient Egypt! • Pyramids are decorated with, paintings, carved stone images, hieroglyphics, and statues. • They tell the stories of pharaohs, gods, common people, birds, plants, and animals. • Nobody knows how the people built these breath taking pyramids. • The Pyramid Age began in the Old Kingdom. The Age continued until 1640 B.C. • To build the Great pyramid at Giza, it took 100,000 men and twenty years.

Pyramids in Ancient Egypt! • These pyramids hold rooms, courtyards, secret passageways, and all kinds of fancy traps to trick robbers trying to steal treasures. • Many cities grow up around a pyramids construction, these were called Pyramid Cities. • The Pharaoh would provide homes for all workers or his pyramid.

  9. Why Are the Tombs in the Shape of a Pyramid? • The pyramids represent the first land to ever appear at the beginning of time, it was called ‘Ben-Ben’ • The pyramids had sloping sides so that the pharaoh could climb to the sky and live forever. • The pyramid represents rays of the sun.

Hieroglyphics • It is made up of three types of symbols, these symbols are alphabetic, syllabic, and determinative. • Alphabetic signs are symbols that correspond to a letter or a sound made by that sign. • Syllabic signs stand for sounds made by a group of letters, a syllable. • Determinative signs relate to a specific object or idea, as in a man, woman, or water. • Used for different kinds of writing.

Hieroglyphics • Eventually, the pictures the Egyptians used to represent words became sounds. • Hieroglyphics are used in everyday life, also with their important religious reasons. • After 400 A.D. the Egyptian language was written in the Greek alphabet, with more letters. • Some people think that this was used for magical spells and religious reasons. • Hieroglyphics means “sacred-drawings” in Greek.

Hieroglyphics • Hieroglyphics are basically drawings that represent objects that are easier to draw than the actual object. • First people drew little things like a sheep, but now the Egyptians use them to add to other symbols, like sheep plus lawnmower, equals shower. • Egyptians started using Hieroglyphics around 3000 BC. • If you come to Egypt, you can LEARN HIEROGLYPHICS from one of our schools!

  13. Fun Facts • The geography of the Egypt is based around the Nile. • Every year, the snow in the north melts, and overflows the Nile. As the waters receded black rich soil is left behind, which is great for farming. • The Nile also provides drinking and bathing, transportation and trade. • It also provides materials for building, cloth for clothes, and with a reed like plant grown on the side of Nile, they can make paper called papyrus. • Egypt would not exist without the Nile.

  14. Fun Facts • The land beyond the river valley is a desert. It is difficult to march an army, and the provisions they need across a desert. Therefore, Egypt is quite protected. • There are six large water filled rapids called cataracts along the Nile River south of Egypt. They make it difficult for navies to attack Egypt by water. • Locks, keys, combs, scissors, wigs, make -ups, deodorants, toothbrushes, and toothpastes were all inventions by the people of Ancient Egypt. • The Egyptian game Senet is one of the best known games.

Fun Facts • Pharaohs will never show their hair to outsiders. • The very first pyramid built was surrounded by a 34 ft wall with 15 doors. • The women of Ancient Egypt enjoy legal equality with men. • Egyptians believe that the world is round and that the Nile flowed through the middle of it. • In every temple the pharaoh was supposed to carry out the duties of the priest, but the high priest usually took his place. • To keep away flies the pharaohs would have slaves cover themselves with honey.

  16. Fun Facts • The pyramids of Giza is a place you definitely want to see! • Half human half lion Sphinx is also a wonderful sight. • Temples of Hatshepsut Rammessum, Thebes and Ramses the 3rd, and many more. • The Valley of Kings is where some of the greatest pharaohs tombs are held.

So Come To Egypt Now…. • You can tour the homes of the towns people and experience their daily lives. • You can see the great pyramids of Giza and many others! • You can learn hieroglyphics from one of our amazing schools. • You can see our wonderful geography, full of beautiful sites to see.
