Section 7.7Decomposition Reactions Objective- Identify a decomposition reaction and predict the products of a simple decomposition reaction. By Megan Harrison and Kelsey Keeling
What are Decomposition Reactions? In a decomposition reaction,a single compound is broken down into two or more products by using energy.
Decomposition Reactions • These products can be any combination of elements and compounds. • It is usually very difficult to predict the products of decomposition reactions. • When a simple binary compound breaks down, however, you know the products will be the basic elements. • Most decomposition reactions require energy in the form of heat, light, or electricity.
Combination Reactions and Decomposition Reactions Example of a combination reaction: 2H₂+O2 2 H₂O Example of a decomposition reaction: 2H₂O 2H₂+O2 electricity electricity
Decomposition Reactions CaCO₃ CaO + CO₂
Example of Decomposition Reaction What is the Equation for this decomposition reaction? A AB B Green Yellow Blue
Another Example of Decomposition Reaction ∆ • Mercury(II) oxide • HgO(s) ∆ Hg(l)+O2(g) ∆ 2. 2HgO(s) 2Hg(l)+O2(g)
Now you try!!!! Which is the correct answer to this formula? CuCO3 CuCO3 CuO+CO4 B. CuCO3 CuO2+O+C C. CuCO3 CuO+ CO2
Try to Find this Decomposition FORMULA • Write a balanced chemical equation. nickel (II)carbonate nickel (II) oxide + ____ NiCO3 NiO + CO2
Extra Facts • Decomposition chemical reactions are generally classified into three main types, which are catalytic, electrolytic, or thermal. • The type of energy exchange is classified as either endothermic or exothermic, which describes the manner in which the chemical bonds of a substance have been broken
