  13. The Permanence of Racism The notion that racism is a permanent component of American life. Racism in the USA is persuasive and operates like the air we breathe; it is ubiquitous and omnipresent. Pacific Educational Group 2013 *Research on subconscious and implicit racial bias has found that a vast majority of us, myself included, have internalized certain racist and prejudicial beliefs about people of color. Dear White America Pg. 67 *African children prefer white dolls to black dolls, because they view the former as “good’ and “nice” while they see the latter as “mean” and “stupid.” Dear White America Pg. 68-69 *Post-racial is false, as to say sexism has disappeared in Indian, Pakistan, G.B., and Israel following the election of female prime ministers. The Permanence of Racism Continued • 1.2 million cases of overt racial discrimination in the work place. • New lighter skinned immigrants mostly from Europe shown to earn 15% as equally qualified darker skinned non-European immigrants. • Slavery, Segregation, Immigration Restrictions against non-European Immigrants • Negative self image of one’s self

Dear White America Pg 40 If people of color would simply try harder, they could make it Even if racism remains a problem, dwelling on the matter or making too big a issue of it will only harm people of color – encouraging a “victim mentality”. That the real thing holding people of color back – especially black folks – is not racism, but rather their own behavioral pathologies. It is unfair to criticize the United States for racism in the past or present; after all, every nation has had its problems with discrimination and inequality.

  19. Internal Work Explore our own cultural identity Examine our attitudes, assumptions, misconceptions Embrace the change and grow from it Talk about racism – it won’t perpetuate the victim mentality
