CONSUMING ZEAL CLEANSING THE TEMPLE JOHN 2:13-22
JESUS CLEANSES THE TEMPLE • He wasn’t upset at what they were doing, but where they were doing it (Deut. 14:23-26; John 2:16) • His actions caused a commotion • He took action against the instigators and participators (Mk. 11:15-16) • He had authority to do this (John 2:18-22) • Zeal for God’s house consumed Him (John 2:17)
ZEAL • Fury / zealous fire (Heb. 10:27) • Paul’s zeal (Phil. 3:6) • II Cor. 7:11 – zeal in avenging wrong • II Cor. 9:2 – contagious zeal • Rom. 10:2 – zeal must be in accordance to knowledge • Are you zealous like Jesus? Or are we complacent, not wanting to cause a scene?
LEARNING FROM JESUS ZEALSHARING HIS ZEAL • We are the temple (I Cor. 3:16-17; II Cor. 6:16; Eph. 2:21) • Would we show the same zeal when people misuse the temple? • Making the church about money? • Making the church about entertainment? • Changing the work of the church? • Changing the structure of the church? • Etc.
LEARNING FROM JESUS ZEALSHARING HIS ZEAL • Will we recognize the church as His temple? • Will we be zealous, the way Jesus was?
SHOULD WE OVERTURN TABLES AND KICK PEOPLE OUT? • Do we have authority? • We should fight against unauthorized changes • We should remove ourselves from those who dare to change God’s temple (Num. 16:20-24)
LEARNING FROM JESUS ZEALSHARING HIS ZEAL • You (individually) are His temple (I Cor. 6:19) • What happens if we do not bear the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:19-24) or are caught up in sin? • Will we cleanse out the temple as zealously as Jesus did?
