  1. Zeal 8/11/13 Adult Auditorium Class

  2. Intro • What is the most important thing to have as a Christian?

  3. Zeal Definition • Zeal: eagerness and ardent interest in pursuit of something. • What are some synonyms you can think of for zeal?

  4. Zeal • Galatians 4:18 But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you. • What are we zealous for? If we take an honest look at our lives what do we devote our time to? • Are the things we devote our time to good or not? • Class discussion….

  5. zeal • Titus 2:12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

  6. What we do • Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going. • Why does Solomon give this advice? • Class discussion: Doesn’t the overall message of Ecclesiastes contradict this thinking?

  7. Metaphor • Think of YOUR zeal as a fire. How hot does your fire burn daily? Does it fizzle out due to a lack of fuel or inattention? Is your fire burning hot enough to endure a breeze of adversity or a shower of hardship?

  8. Laodicea • Revelations 3:15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. • 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.

  9. Zeal alone? • Romans 10:1Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

  10. Class Question • This brings us back to our original question in class. What is one of the most important things for a Christian to have?

  11. ANswer • A Christian is in need of many things. Knowledge, zeal, God’s word, etc. are all important. If you don’t have one you can’t effectively do your duty as a Christian.

  12. Impact of our zeal • What kind of an impact does our zeal have?

  13. impact • II Corinthians 9:1Now concerning the ministering to the saints, it is superfluous for me to write to you; 2 for I know your willingness, about which I boast of you to the Macedonians, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal has stirred up the majority.

  14. Goal for the week • I would like for everyone to stop for a moment at least once a day and reflect on if you were zealous for God. Try to look at it objectively, and use this to evaluate if you need to “burn” for God more.
