Although templates look “pretty” when you see them in Microsoft Word, they have the potential to turn into an ugly duckling when sent. • Always remember that your resume should be a working document. Templates make it impossible to add professional experiences or change keywords. • Resume templates are inflexible and force you to present your experience in a one-size-fits-all format. • It is important to note that your resume reflects your personal character, make it original to your personality. Templates are NOT unique. • If the employer that you are sending your resume to has a different version of Word, the template may possibly reformat or open in different characters. (Show examples)
GET YOUR RESUME NOTICED • Keywords are a vital piece of the puzzle. • Think of keywords as the jargon or “buzzwords” used by the insiders in a profession or industry. It is how insiders describe themselves and others in their profession. These are the terms they give to the people writing job descriptions as the job requirements. • If your resume is scanned electronically by a potential employer, the computer scanner may pick up on these keywords. Electronic resume scanners are programmed to look for key terms in your resume. The verbs they are looking for will usually be included in the job advertisement. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reB8rZ7nHjM
YOUR PROFESSIONAL EMAIL • Your professional email should be separate from your personal email. • Example: John Smith = jsmith@gmail.comor Susan Porter = porters1@yahoo.com • BAD examples: sexychick54@gmail.com or shawnsloverxo@yahoo.com or ilovedisney@sbcglobal.com. • Keeping your professional email separate for your job search makes it easier for you to decipher your work and personal information. • Make sure to check your professional email daily and respond to emails in a timely fashion. • Remember that your potential employer will be viewing this email address and it relates to them what kind of person you may be.
KEEPING A PROFESSIONAL PORTFOLIO • Items to include: personal information, past experiences, education and references. • Personal information includes address, phone number and email address. • Experiences can include both your professional work experience as well as clinical experience. • Education should include the facility you attended as well as the location, program of study and year of graduation. • Make sure to have at least three professional references on hand and have their name, title, phone number, address and email address. Be sure to ask your references for permission. • This portfolio can also be a place for you to keep your certifications and diplomas.
