India's intiative in Space Research • 1972 - Space Commission and Department of Space set up. ISRO brought under DOS (June 1, 1972). • 1975 - First Indian Satellite, Aryabhata, launched (April 19, 1975). • 1979 - Bhaskara-I, an experimental satellite for earth observations, launched (June 7, 1979).
India's intiative in Space Research • 1981- First developmental launch of SLV-3. • 1984 - Indo-Soviet manned space mission (April 1984). • 2001 - First Launch of the GSLV successfully completed on April 18 2001. • 2001 – Polar Satellite Launch vehicle – PSLV – C3 successfully launched 3 satellites.
India's intiative in Space Research • 2002 – Successful launch of Insat – 3C • 2003 - 2007 – 9 more Insat series satellite launched. Currently 11 satellites are in service • 1999 – Launch of Ocean Sat-1, India’s remote sensing Satellite system (IRS). Currently consists of 8 such systems. • 2008 – Successful launch of Chandrayaan - 1
Indian Astronaut's Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian and 138th person to travel in space. He joined the Indian Air Force and progressed rapidly through the ranks. In a famous conversation, he was asked by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi how India looked from the space and he replied, Saare Jahan Se Achcha. He was conferred with the honour of Hero of Soviet Union upon his return from space. The Government of India conferred its highest gallantry award, the Ashoka Chakra on him Rakesh Sharma has now retired from active employment and is currently the Chairman of The Board for Automated Workflow.
Indian Astronaut's Kalpana Chawla (March 17, 1962 – February 1, 2003), was an Indian-American astronaut and space shuttle mission specialist. She was one of seven crewmembers killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster
Indian Astronaut's Sunita Williams is a person of Indian Origin who was a member of Expedition 14 & then Expedition 15. She holds the record for longest space flight (195 days) for Female space travellers. Her ancestral village is Jhulasan in Gujurat.

Space Shuttles Space Shuttlescarries Astronauts and Payloads such as satellites or Space Station parts into the Earths upper atmosphere. During the descent and Landing, The Space shuttle orbiter acts as a Glider and makes a completely unpowered landing
Rocket Rocket / Rocket vehicleis a missile, aircraft or other vehicle used for fireworks and weaponry, ejection seats and launch vehicles for artificial satellites, human space flight and exploration of other planets. In Military weapons Rockets are used to propel payloads to their targets. Rockets are used for science and research purposes also.
