How sophisticated was Ancient Egyptian medicine? Aims To understand how features of Egyptian life affected medicine To find out who treated the sick and the cures they used To evaluate whether there was greater change or continuity in Egyptian medicine
Your task • Read p.16-17 and create a spider diagram on how Egyptian life affected Egyptian medicine. Your diagram should include the following categories: • Wealth • Trade • Improved writing • Religion • Nile & farming
Wealth • International trade • Fertile farmlands due to River Nile • Rich employed specialist doctors employed, e.g. pharaoh’s physican • Specialist craftsmen able to produce medical instruments
Trade • International commercial links • Ideas on new medicines, e.g. herbal remedies Egyptian traders
Writing • Papyrus • Treatments and remedies could be passed down or among doctors
Religions • Belief in afterlife led to new discoveries through embalming • Body parts removed & preserved
Nile & farming • Comparisons made between life-giving properties of Nile & channels inside body, e.g. veins & arteries
Your task Study the sources on p.18. Discuss these questions with our neighbour: • Who treated the sick in Egyptian times? • Is there any evidence doctors were specialists? • Is there any evidence that women acted as healers? If they did, why is there so little evidence?
Your task • Read the information on p.18-21 and complete a chart similar to the one below:
Extension task • Choose one of the Ancient Egyptian cures mentioned on p.20-21 and write a short radio or TV advert for it. Take a vote as a class on which product you would buy based on the historical accuracy of the advert and how convincing the advert was.
Your task • Study sources 1-5 and on the map of the world note as many of the following: • Evidence of who cured the sick, e.g. doctors or medicine men • Types of cures & medicines • If the Prehistoric Britons / Ancient Egyptians used these methods
Writing task • Was Egyptian medicine an important step forward? Answer this question as an essay. You should try to discuss these points: • Which ideas did Egyptians continue to use? • Which ideas were new? • Why the changes were important for the future
