AlgebraChapter 1: Tools of AlgebraLesson 1-2: Exponents and Order of Operations Goal: Simplify and evaluate expressions and formulas.
Simplifying Expressions • simplify: To simplify a numerical expression, replace it with its simplest name. • exponent, base, power: An exponent tells how many times a number, the base, is used as a factor. A power has two parts, a base and an exponent.
Order of Operations • P: Perform any operation(s) inside grouping symbols. (Parentheses, etc.) • E: Simplify powers. (Deal with exponents.) • MD: Multiply and divide in order from left to right. • AS: Add and subtract in order from left to right.
Evaluating expressions • To evaluate an algebraic expression, substitute a given number for each variable. Then, simplify the numerical expression using the order of operations.
Assignments and a Note: • Class work: “Marionette” worksheet, without calculators. • Cover book, read syllabus, return signature sheet. • Homework 1-2: #5 - 50 (every 5th), no calculators. Plus, #58, 59, and 65, calculator ok. • Quiz on Thursday.
