FREILOTWorkshop Energy Efficient Intersections Siebe Turksma PEEK Traffic
Priority in FREILOT • Heavy, high impact vehicles get priority based on one of the following: • Size (passive detection) • Simple tag (RFID) identifying vehicles as FREILOT scheme member • (Pre-) Co-operative technology • This leads to less stops for high impact vehicles
Other mechanisms to avoid stops • Coordination in a network of intersections (for all vehicles) • Ensuring coordination specifically for high impact vehicles • (specifically FREILOT – members) • Longer cycle times during high volume traffic
Simulation experiment • Microsimulation(AIMSUN) in network of 9 intersection • Two vehicle classes • 10-16 ton modern heavy goods vehicles (22% of total volume) • Modern small private cars (78% of total volume) • Adaptive traffic control system (UTOPIA) • Approximation of Cooperative Priority Application by giving the HVG’s on the main routes additional weight in the optimisation • Comparison of • State-of-the art adaptive control optimised for overall delay • Approximation of the Cooperative Priority Application
Main results Note: the comparison is made with state-of-the-art adaptive control
To discuss (1) • Longer cycle times are generally more efficient, but result in: • Longer waiting times for side roads • Longer waiting times for VRU’s (with potential safety impact) • To what extent is this acceptable?
To discuss (2) • Priority for HGV’s can have an impact on other traffic (positive and negative) • Priority for HGV’s can attract more traffic • Questions: • Do we need/want services based on: • Time window • Payment • Demonstrable eco-behaviour (like acceleration limiter, acceptable emissions etc.)
