  1. FREILOTWorkshop Acceleration/Speed Limiter Maria Tevell Volvo Technology Corporation

  2. Background • R&D work at Volvo has shown that 5% of fuel can be saved using the acceleration limiter • Test bench simulation of complete vehicle and journey • “Urban delivery cycle” • In FREILOT we want to validate these results in real life conditions

  3. Proposed implementation • The vehicle acceleration is limited to a certain level in order to optimize the fuel consumption in relation to mobility trade-off • The function is tailor made to optimize a specific travel to be made by a specific truck • Mobility targets will be defined by the customer in a graphical user interface used by fleet operator

  4. Acceleration Limiter Model Proposed implementation • An acceleration limitation map and related parameters are adjusted using an off-board tool (I-Truck) which automatically calculates the optimized set-up of parameters Dataset Calibration I-Truck • Fuel consumption • Expected time • Predicted emissions • Speed limitations • Slopes • Curves • Stops Vehicle model Desired route & time to dest. Plug-indata extraction Customer interface 3D maps Navteq Library

  5. Proposed implementation • The vehicle acceleration is leveled off by limiting the engine’s acceleration. • The engine acceleration limit is taken from the engine map giving engine speed and total drive train ratio (expressed in mm the vehicle moves per engine revolution, calculated from gear ratio, K-factor and gearbox teeth).

  6. Volvo architecture

  7. To discuss • Implementation of the function in customers trucks in the field • Final adaptation of the off-board I-Truck tool for use by real customers • Legal implications of parameters tailoring

  9. Speed limiter

  10. Background • Different pre studies have shown that management of the speed plan is one of the best potentials to achieve fuel consumption reduction. Within the Volvo group, several projects are on going to define the best balance between truck speed and trip time. One of them offer the possibility to control the speed of the truck depending of the road attributes : Adaptive Speed Limiter. • R&D work indicates that 1% of fuel can be saved in urban driving each time the average speed is lowered of 1 km/h • Volvo/Renault trucks see Acceleration/Speed limiter as an important tool for reducing fuel consumption

  11. Proposed implementation • The Telematic Gate Way hosts the ASL function • The function can exchange data with the back office : • Vehicle position from GPS is sent • Localization in speed limited area is done by back office • Speed limit is decided and sent to the truck • Driver validates the instruction • The truck rolls under a limited and • controlled speed

  12. Proposed implementation Depending on road profile or speed zone Speed zone Road profile

  13. Proposed implementation

  14. To discuss • Final implementation of the function in the hardware of the truck • Interest for customer for a system based on speed zone and back office • Back office and speed zone definition, (fleet, service provider, city) • Deployment issues, such as: • Is the system an after market solution or does it have to be built in from the beginning into trucks? • How will we determine the price it would cost to purchase and install the system? • How do we tackle security implications if max allowed vehicle speed is sent via air?
