Innermost coffin of Tutankhamen, from his tomb at Thebes,Dynasty XVIII, c.1325 B.C. • Obsessed with immortality; to ensure safety and happiness in the afterlife • The ka; other self which on the death of the fleshy body could inhabit the corpse and live on • The body must remain intact; developed embalming for dignitaries • Mummification, food, drink, clothing, utensils and other living apparatus • Image of the deceased sculpted in the round and paintings of the work cycles adorned the walls
