A focus on Nodes • “One of our earliest mistakes was that we did not understand the importance of Participant Nodes in implementing GBIF, did not give enough attention to defining what a Node is intended to be, and did not support the development or operation of Nodes early enough. Many GBIF Participants still do not fully appreciate the significant monetary and personnel costs needed for a successful Node, and as a result only a few Nodes are truly effective. • There are also significant disagreements in some countries between the centralised Node and independent-minded data providers. So far we have tiptoed around these problems. A forthright plan for dealing with Nodes is sorely needed.”
