Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is a story about a black family in Mississippi who is struggling to keep their land during the Depression. The white people don’t think that a black person should have that much land. The family goes out of their way to keep the land and have a roof to sleep under. Brief Summary
It starts when the children’s friend TJ robs a store with two other white teens. Later that night, an armada of cars shows up. The people who were driving drag TJ and his family out of their house and start to beat them. As soon as the Cassie’s father finds out, he starts a fire to distract the white men and stop them from killing TJ and his family. Climax
Farmers and other men, white and black, fight the fire all night. Eventually it is put out and TJ and his family are not further injured for the time being. TJ is thrown in jail for robbing the store. The white teens say nothing and make TJ take all the blame. Resolution
My favorite quote from Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is on page 95 when the author wrote, “A cold wind rose, biting through my jacket, and I shivered.” I liked that quote because its original and it really helps me feel what the character feels at that moment in the book. I have also felt that way when I am cold. Favorite quote
I think the audience for this book would be kids around the ages of 11 or 12 because the characters are close to their age. Also, it would be for anyone who is learning about segregation and prejudice because the Logan family is treated badly by white people. audience
I would recommend this book because it can make you sad, happy, and angry. It can also teach you about how hard it was for the black people before the Civil Rights Movement. It is also a good lesson about history during the 1930’s. recommendation
