Background • This novel is about life for an African-American family, the Logans, in Depression-era Mississippi. The Logans are fortunate; they own their own land in a time and place when many—black and white—are living as sharecroppers* on various plantations. However, they are also living in a time and place when racially-motivated crimes are common. *Sharecropper- a farmer who lives on the landlord’s land and gives a portion of crops as rent
