Objectives • To explore the meaning and importance of personality traits within the workplace • To discuss the range of research/information roles within organisations • To discuss the range of personality traits demonstrated by research and information professionals • To look at PAPI - a personality-based assessment tool and how it applies to individuals and teams of researchers

  3. Definition of personality “A complex and unique set of psychological qualities that influence an individual’s characteristic patterns of behaviour over time across different situations”

  4. Trait theories • trait theorists start from the premise that a personality can be described by its position on a number of separate dimensions each of which represents a trait • a trait is any characteristic in which one individual differs from another in a relatively permanent and consistent way • opinions differ as to how many traits are needed to comprehensively describe the human personality • the most widely accepted framework consists of five broad traits and these are referred to as the ‘Big Five’

PAPI Roles • 10 Role scales • Expressed as perception statements, e.g., “I always focus on the steps ahead” [H] • Measure our perception of key aspects of work situation • External determinants of behaviour • ‘Situational’ characteristics that put pressure on us to behave in certain ways - organisational culture, demands of job role, management style of boss, etc.

PAPI Needs • 10 Need scales • Expressed as preference statements, e.g., “I like to do new things” [Z - Need for Change] • Measures our preference for behaving in particular ways based on what has gone before, i.e., general tendency • Internal determinants of behaviour • Need satisfaction vs. Need frustration • A measure of stable personality traits
