Definition of personality “A complex and unique set of psychological qualities that influence an individual’s characteristic patterns of behaviour over time across different situations”
Trait theories • trait theorists start from the premise that a personality can be described by its position on a number of separate dimensions each of which represents a trait • a trait is any characteristic in which one individual differs from another in a relatively permanent and consistent way • opinions differ as to how many traits are needed to comprehensively describe the human personality • the most widely accepted framework consists of five broad traits and these are referred to as the ‘Big Five’
