Scientific Method • Pose a testable question • Research the science behind our question • Develop a hypothesis based on what we have learned in our research • Design an experiment that tests our question • Conduct the experiment • Analyze the results and form conclusions • Write a (rather lengthy) science paper presenting our experiment • Design and construct a display board to present at the GKSF at Union Station in March
Parent Responsibility • Don’t worry – this is not YOUR science project • Most of the work will be completed in class • Next couple of weeks, kids will need to research at home • Still refining topic questions
When do we start experimenting? • After procedure is approved by Ms. Medina • Any experiment dealing with bacteria or human participants has to have a form on file with Science Pioneers before tests begin
Materials • Students will need to provide the materials for their experiment • Costs are usually split between the group • Material lists must be approved by parents before commitments to procedure are solidified
Testing • Observations and tests may need to be conducted at home (Usually in December/January) • Students will need to get together to do this • Important that students record EVERYTHING • Quantitative Data needed
Trials • All experiments must have 10 – 20 trials • 15 - 20 is ideal • Tests may only have ONE variable • Conditions must be controlled, as much as possible • Students should already have identified constants
Results, Conclusions, Displays • We will work in class to put together the data, analyze the results, and draw conclusions • All students will work on a very visually appealing Display Board in February
Greater Kansas City Science Fair • All projects set up on Wednesday, March 12th • Judging of projects March 12th and March 13th • STRETCH Field Trip to GKCFS Friday, March 14th • Awards Ceremony for Division and Special Awards Winners – • Saturday, March 15th • 10:00 am to 12:00 pm • Bartle Hall
