  3. Internet Basics What is the Internet? • Internet, World Wide Web, The Web, The Net • A large computer network linking individual computers around the world • Often called “the web” because of the intricate, web- like way computers are connected

  7. Internet Basics URLs • Acronym for “Uniform Resource Locator” • Address of internet pages and files • Consists of three parts

Internet Basics Protocol • Always at the front of the URL • http = “hypertext transfer protocol”- the language of web pages • https = “hypertext transfer protocol SECURED” - layer of encryption to hide your personal information and passwords - should always be the start of a page collecting your personal information

  9. Internet Basics Homepage • The page that is automatically displayed when you first open your browser • Can be left at the default or changed in the settings menu • Often defaults to Google or another search engine
