  4. Paragraph out of order • Activity: Put your paragraphs out of order • Have the other students put them in the right order by placing a number next to the sentence. • See how you did!

  5. Refutation • What is the purpose of a refutation argument?

  6. Refutation Example: • Many people feel that global warming is not a national concern, or at least not as large of a concern as some make it out to be. In some areas, the ice caps are actually increasing and are 75% greater than just last year. However, global warming is devastating to the areas other than the icecaps, which is causing storms to rage and water levels to rise. Additionally, the ice caps are not regenerating in all areas. Ignoring the issue just because of a single area would be a great disservice to both ecosystems and communities.

  7. Pick a topic in your groups! Come up with a refutation for: • Gym class should not be mandatory for people who play sports. • The rain forest should be saved. • Childhood obesity is a major concern. • Uniforms should/should not be worn in schools. • Technology is/is not dangerous to societies. • Cell phones should/should not be allowed in schools. • State your: • 1. Argument • 2. Refutation Why?
