  1. CONCENTRATION when STUDYING

  2. Concentration • Defined as the ability to direct your thinking • Goal is to focus on task at hand and eliminate distractions

  3. “Concentrating is soooo HARD!” • Your mind wanders from one thing to another • Your worries distract you • Outside distractions take you away before you know it • The material is boring, difficult, and/or not interesting to you

  4. Tips to help you CONCENTRATE • Find a quiet and peaceful environment to study in • Do NOT answer your cell phone! • Put up a “Do not disturb” sign • Stick to a routine, efficient study schedule that accommodates your day/nighttime energy levels • Before studying, gather what you need and decide on a general strategy of accomplishment • Create an incentive for completing the task (eg. A piece of chocolate)

  5. TIPS (cont…) • Change the subject you study every one to two hours so your brain doesn’t get FRIED with one subject • Alternate reading with more active learning study strategies • Try group studying or making study questions • Take regular, scheduled breaks (eg. Walk around the house for 10 min after every hour of studying) • REWARD yourself for completing a task!

  6. Strategies to keep you FOCUSED • “Be here now” • When you notice your thoughts wandering, say to yourself “be here now,” and gently bring your attention back to where you want it • Worry or think time • Set aside a specific time each day to think about all your tasks and worries • When a distracting thought enters your mind, remind yourself you have a special time to think about it • Let the thought go • Keep your appointment to worry or think about those distracting thoughts

  7. STRATEGIES (cont…) • Before you start studying, visualize yourself in a place where concentration is not a problem for you • Don’t put off the hard subjects! • Study your hardest subjects at your highest energy level times and your easiest or most interesting subjects at your lower energy level times • Tally your mental wanderings • Split up an index card into 3 sections: morning, afternoon, and evening • Each time your mind wanders, make a tally in the appropriate section (keep a different index card for every day) • Over time you will see the number of tallies decrease!

  8. Ready to STUDY!? • YESSSSS!!!!! • With all these tips and strategies in mind, you should be able to CONCENTRATE on your studies and ACE that next exam

  9. TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THIS WORKSHOP PLEASE COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING WORKSHEET AND TURN IT INTO YOUR COORDINATOR

  10. Student Name: ________________________ • CONCENTRATION • 1. Make a list of at least 3 things that distract you when you are trying to study. • 2. What would be a good (and reasonable) reward for when you finish a task? How will allowing yourself that reward when you finish studying help you to concentrate? • 3. Pick up a textbook in a boring subject or go online and look up a non-interesting article in the New York Times. Whenever you find your mind wandering, use the “Be here now” technique to bring you back to focus. Describe how you felt while using that technique and if it helped you or not.
