    3. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Craft Awards Designed to enable groups of SMEs, with no or inadequate research facilities, to engage third parties to carry out research on their behalf. Proposals can be submitted in a two-stage process, although the first stage can be omitted. The scheme covers a number of R&D areas.

    4. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Craft Stage 1 - Exploratory Award This enables the project to be properly scoped and for new partners to be brought on board. Partners: Minimum 2 SMEs, or 1 SME and one end-user (e.g. Hospital or Library) from 2 Member or 1 Member and 1 Associated State; SMEs not to have been involved in previous EC R&D projects Project Cost Up to 75% of cost up to 22,500 ECU

    5. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Craft Stage 2 - Complete Proposal This stage involves a full proposal justifying the expected research project. Partners: At least 3 non-affiliated SMEs from at least 2 Member States or 1 Member State and 1 Associated State RTD performers, to carry out at least 40% of the research: Research Centres, Universities, private companies 1 - 2 Year Project Cost: Total 0.3 to 2.0 MECU Funding EU 50%

    6. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES A Meat Substitute based on Quinoa Quinoa is a botanical fruit of a herb plant, which is becoming increasing available in health stores. It is used in cooking in a similar way to grain, such as wheat. The partners on this project wanted to be able to exploit the fruit by producing a product which is a meat substitute. The technical research was aimed at solid substrate fermentation biotechnology needed to convert the fruit into a meat substitute

    8. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Efficient Recovery of Flax Fibres Due to the increasing world-wide pressure for alternative fibres the cotton industry alone cannot meet this demand, and synthetic fibres are economically and environmentally unsatisfactory. The aim of the project was to carry out research in an effort to maximise the yield of flax straw and “cotton-compatible” flax fibres. A research feasibility study on flax cultivation and processing was carried out by the research performers. The SMEs expect to exploit by way of franchise of the cultivation and processing systems.

    10. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Reduced Applications of Chemicals in European Raspberry Production (RACER) Raspberries are a high value crop with a long establishment period that requires high capital expenditure. Growers rely on chemical control. Fungicides and insecticides, to ensure high quality fruit production. However there is increasing pressure from retailers and consumers to reduce chemical inputs. The objective was to provide the Industrial Partners with a new European Code of Best Practice in pest and disease control.

    12. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Investigation of the Causes of Mortality in Oyster Production (ROMEO) The objective of the project was to identify and combat the periodic loss in oyster hatcheries. The project developed a model hatchery and nursery for controlled tests on larvae and algae. The project involved the analysis of environmental factors when rearing oyster larvae including, feeding, seawater quality and causes of disease in relation to mortality. Bioremediation of seawater and probiotic improvement in algae cultures in parallel with improving the overall health of the oyster seed and larvae will ultimately improve production and thus profitability.

    14. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Mercury Free Catalysts for Polyurethane Product Providers The objective of the project was to understand how the choice of catalyst for PU manufacture affects the reaction and properties of a chosen PU system and to derive a predictive model to select the optimum catalyst for a given system. It was hope to find an alternative catalyst to the hazardous mercury catalyst currently used. This involved the development of mathematical models for a range of PU systems, including, rigid and flexible foams, elastomers and surface coatings.

    17. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Better Process Control in Leather Production The tanning industry uses chemical technologies to convert hides and skins into leather. This is done using closed drums, so that most of the processing is blind, the consequences being that the effects can be inconsistent and inefficient. The first objective of this project was to develop a compact and reliable, on-line, battery operated pH and temperature measurement module to fit into existing equipment. The second objective was to design an off-line colour measurement system to analyse solutions from the drums as an indicator of the colour take-up of the hides being processed.

NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Physical Vapour Deposition of Oxide Coatings The objective of the project was to develop the coating technology equipment to produce new metallic oxide coatings for shielding of electronic components, and for the large area environmental protection of constructional materials on a continuous coating basis. This involved the optimisation of all process parameters including a reliable pulsed DC power supply based on a large magnetron and the investigation of the properties of various oxide coatings, including aluminium oxide, for the deposition onto metal and insulating substrates.

    22. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Development of Refractory Inspection and Evaluation Equipment Refractory linings are used by major industrial companies to provide thermal and erosion protection. The manufacture and installation is sub-contracted to a large number of SMEs throughout Europe. Quality control relies mainly on expert visual inspection and rugged Non Destructive Testing (NDT) equipment. The project brought together refractory producers, instrument manufacturers and end users to develop a quality assurance monitor for refractory inspection.

    25. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Lower Cost, Reinforced Plastic Pipe Plastics for pipelines for gas, water and oil has been restricted to small diameter pies and low pressures. Production of pipes greater than 100mm diameter and able to withstand higher operating pressures is limited by existing extrusion process and the plastic materials’ properties. Thermoplastic pultrusion has proved to be highly successful, a novel die technology with continuous fibre reinforcement has enabled long lengths of pipe at lower costs which should compete with metal pipes.

    28. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Performance Measurement of Diamond Tools for Sawing and Drilling The aim of this project was to set standards of the performance of diamond tools used in the processing of natural stones, building and hard materials generally. The inability of users to define a quality tool means selection is often based on price. This results in high quality goods being driven out of the market place and consumers suffer. The introduction of a quality mark is expected to improve the sales and market share of the SMEs involved in this project.

    31. NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Fluorescent Microspheres as Labels for Ultrasensitive Analytical Measurements Fluorescent assays are becoming very important in fields such as biochemical and clinical analysis. The sensitivity of such assays is usually limited by the ability to reject “background” fluorescence. Most background emission decays within a few nanoseconds of excitation. The aim of the project was to develop novel long-lifetime fluorescent labels suitable for high sensitivity assays along with instrumentation for their detection.

NJM European, Economic & Management Consultants Limited CRAFT CASE STUDIES Measuring Product Conformity to Telecommunications (SDL) Specifications IT communications standards, particularly in the telecommunications sector are becoming increasingly sophisticated and complicated. Testing is the only way of ensuring the products conform to the relevant standards and can interwork with products from different manufacturers. The aim of this project was to develop a tool to automate the production of conformance tests to improve productivity and quality.
