Purpose of Local Government • Enable democratic local decision making and action by and on behalf of communities; and • Promote the social , economic, environmental and cultural well being of communities , in the present and for the future – LGA Section 10
Local Govt Sustainable Approach Local authorities should take into account • The social, economic, & cultural well-being of people & communities • Need to maintain & enhance the quality of the environment • The reasonably foreseeable needs of future generations
What are Community Outcomes • Statements of community aspirations and priorities • Belong to the community • Identified through community consultation • Each council to facilitate the identification of outcomes – regional and local
Purposes of Identifying COs • Provide opportunities for communities to discuss and prioritise desired outcomes – SEEC • Provide scope to measure progress • Promote better coordination and application of community resources
Community Outcomes Life-cycle • Identify community outcomes • at least every six years • Respond to community outcomes • Develop community response. Council contribution signaled in long term council community plan, other organisations make decisions on contribution • Monitor and Report on progress • At least every three years
Key Community Stakeholders • Organisations capable of influencing the identification and promotion of community outcomes • Requirement to secure KCS approval to the processes for identifying community outcomes – where practicable • Likely to be involved in all stages of community outcomes – long-term relationships
Opportunities for Collaboration • Consultation • Streamlined approach & development of regional information and profile • Response • Joint initiatives, whole of govt./ whole of community approaches – better use of resources

Next Three Months – Identifying Outcomes • Web site launched to provide information and feedback – www.choosingfutures.co.nz • Regional community visioning workshops in February & March– Dates to be confirmed • Visioning document to be completed – Printed by end of January
Where To From Here – Responding to Outcomes • Need to develop appropriate framework with key stakeholders • Identify work already being done • Identify and prioritise gaps – strategic planning • Develop action plan and execute
Where To From Here – Monitoring & Reporting • Team set up to look at monitoring and reporting - MARCO • Work being done to identifycore indicator set • Workshops to be held to discuss information needs, select suitable indicators and cost effective data capture • Information sharing protocols
