  2. Goals for today Connecting the Dots... Michigan Academic Standards and the M-Step • reading, writing and mathematics presented as tools for learning • increased focus on the application (product) of learning • Overview of the M-Step • Opportunity to take and score • ELA and Math Classroom Activity • ELA and Math Performance Assessment .

  3. What is M-STEP? Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress The M-STEP will include: • Summative assessments designed to measure student growth effectively. • English language arts and mathematics will be assessed in grades 3–8 • Science in grades 4 and 7 • Social studies in grades 5 and 8 • It also includes the Michigan Merit Examination in 11th grade which consists of the ACT Plus Writing, WorkKeys, and M-STEP summative in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.

  4. Structure of M-Step Three components • Computer Adaptive Test https://wbte.drcedirect.com/MI/portals/mi/ott1 with paper pencil option this year • Classroom Activity • Performance Task (ELA and Math) • taken on computer, but not computer adaptive/or taken with paper/pencil

  5. Structure of M-Step Assessment Items from • Michigan-developed test items • Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium items • Pilot test items

Structure of M-Step Classroom Activity • Purpose- to introduce students to the vocabulary and the context of the Performance Task to follow • 30-minute scripted lesson • presented to the students as close as possible, but no more than 3 days prior to the administration of the Performance Task • may occur on the same day as the PT • delivered in class by the teacher • not an online activity • required task- make-up sessions required

Structure of M-Step Classroom Activity (30 minutes) • teacher can create class charts, tables and graphs to summarize learning • students can take notes • student and teacher notes, graphs, tables and charts cannot be used on the Performance Test • administering the PT without first administering the Classroom Activity is considered a testing irregularity

  8. Structure of M-Step Performance Based ELA Task • 2-5 pieces of source material (reading passages) • 1-2 selected response items • 2-3 short constructed response items • and one full-write essay (extended response item). • Given in 2 parts, with Part 1 given first

  9. Structure of M-Step Performance Based ELA Task Each student will write one full-length essay, written in one of these genres in the Michigan Academic Standards- • Argumentative • Informational • Narrative • Opinion • Explanatory

Structure of M-Step Performance Based Math Task Each student will answer several constructed response questions connected to a math problem such as- “In this task, you will use data to create a model that shows the relationship between animal body weight and pulse rate measures.The you will examine additional data to examine your model”

  11. Calculators The calculators are embedded into the online tests and will only be able to be used on items that allow a calculator. Grades 3-5 will not be allowed to use calculators on any portion of the test. Grades 6-8,11 will have calculators embedded into the test questions if taking online. Paper/pencil tests will allow calculators for sessions 2 and 3 for grades 6-8,11.

  12. Scrap Paper Students will be allowed to use scrap paper for online testing. This paper is considered a secure document and MUST be collected and shredded following the test session. It should be noted that students should keep in mind time as they use scrap paper on the ELA portion as the session does expire at the end of the instructional day.

  14. Test Results It is anticipated that test results will be released in late summer. Raw scores for online tests will be available within 2 weeks of student completing testing in a subject. Once all subjects are tested online, rosters of student results will be made available. Use caution when looking at the near-time reports as the raw score will only include number of correct out of number of items tested.

  15. Tech Enhanced Items It is important that you have teachers practice the online test items with their students. Some of the questions ask for more than one answer, select all that apply, and highlight the text. Science Content of M-Step • Only multiple-choice items • Grade 4: will consist of content learned in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades • Grade 7: will consist of content learned in 5th, 6th, and 7th grades • Grade 11: will measure high school content expectations that a student should know and be able to demonstrate by spring of grade 11 • Similar to the previous MME Day 3 science component- with additional items in the Inquiry strand *No Classroom Activity or Performance Task

Social Studies Content of M-Step • Grade 5: will consist of learning from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades • Grade 8: will consist of learning from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades • Grade 11: will measure high school content expectations that a student should know and be able to demonstrate by spring of grade 11 • Only multiple-choice items • Similar to the previous MME Day 3 science component- with additional items requiring analyzing and interpreting graphic stimuli *No Classroom Activity or Performance Task

  21. Rubrics to assess ELA content • Read closely and Talk to the Text (annotate). • What do you notice? • How are elements weighted?

  22. Assess yourself with the rubric • Read through the Classroom Activity and then complete the Performance Task • Use the corresponding rubric or scoring guide to assess your performance on the activity you just completed

  23. What does this mean for instruction? Based upon... • the performance task you completed? • the rubric/ scoring guide used to assess it? How can you use the samples of ELA and Math Performance Tasks in your classroom?

Other Instructional Implications to consider... • ›More challenging texts to teach reading (both higher grade-level text levels and reductions in amount of out-of-level teaching) • ›Greater use of informational texts to teach reading (particularly in primary grades and in secondary English) • ›Increased emphasis on close reading (or critical reading) • ›Greater attention to argument and evidence • ›More writing about reading • ›Increased emphasis on disciplinary literacy (science, technical subjects, social studies, history) • ›Enhanced role of technology intermixed throughout the standards • Greater use of critical and analytical thinking

  29. 11th Grade Performance Task Due to concerns around testing time, the Classroom Activity and Performance Task components of the 11th grade M-STEP are optional for high schools. While there are some benefits to administering these components, they will not be required. There will be no accountability penalty in terms of participation or scoring for high schools that choose to not administer the classroom activities and performance tasks. This does not apply to the classroom activities and performance tasks in grades 3 through 8 — those are required.
