Comparative study and statistical observation of cross-border conurbations The role of the states in supporting cross-border cooperation Study: MOT+FNAU for DATAR, 2010-2013 Overview of cross-sectional analysis Cross-border territories that benefit from the border as much as they are handicapped by it a beneficial presence, notably in the field of employment a more mitigated impact of the border in other fields • economic dependence of some French border territories • a huge phenomenon of work-home commuting • The local authorities on the French side have to support the cost of residents without financial solidarity (expect in the case of Geneva)

Comparative study and statistical observation of cross-border conurbations The role of the states in supporting cross-border cooperation Study: MOT+FNAU for DATAR, 2010-2013 Difficulties with statistics Demographic data available at all levels, but problem posed by the collection of data in different years Incomplete knowledge of cross-border residential interpenetration because of statistical secrecy Cross-border labour flows: very flawed data collection on some major flows, without data on socio-economic group Employment + students: the definition of these concepts is not the same across the border
