Criminal law refers to the area of laws and justice that involve prosecution by the government of a person for an act that has been classified as a crime. A “crime” is any act or omission of an act that violates public law—local, state, or federal. Persons convicted of a crime may be incarcerated, fined, or both. Crimes include both felonies (serious offenses), which are usually punishable by imprisonment of a year or more, and misdemeanors (less serious offenses), punishable by less than a year.
Civil law refers to the area of laws and justice for individuals and organizations seeking to resolve legal disputes. Different from criminal law, civil law attempts to right a wrong, honor an agreement, or settle a dispute which has arisen between two or more parties. In civil law, an individual or company brings a complaint to the court (in contrast to the government bringing charges in criminal law) to receive compensation from the person or entity who is the cause of the wrong.
