Early Life • She was born to an European Father of Jewish-Hungarian descent and a Mexican Mother on July 6th, 1907 (according to her birth certificate). • This had a huge impact on her life, trying to fit between the two cultures.
Early Life • At age 6, Frida suffered from Polio. This caused her right leg to be thinner indefinately. • She was a tom-boy in high school • In high school is when she met Diego Rivera a famous Mexican Painter
Early Life • On September 17, 1925, she was involved in a terrible bus accident which broke her spinal column • She was expected to die, and lived for a month in a full body cast • This accident though emotionally and physically damaged her for the rest of her life. • But, she started painting during her recovery. • Her style Self-portraits.
Married Life—with Diego Rivera • In 1929, Frida married Diego Rivera, a famous muralist painter in Mexico. • He encouraged her to paint her Mexican roots, similar to his. • He painted Mexico and it’s indigenous roots, especially lilies (alcatraces). • She painted that as well, but also with her own conflictual style between her two different descents.

Married Life—With Diego Rivera • Their marriage consisted of love, affairs with other people, creative bonding, hate, and a divorce in 1940 that lasted only for one year. • Their marriage has been called the union between an elephant and a dove, because Diego was huge and very fat, and Frida was small (a little over 5 feet) and slender.

Married Life—With Diego Rivera • Despite all the affairs, they truly did love each other. • They were always scene together in a loving way. • They knew of each others affairs and actually would joke around with each other and others about them • One dealt with the murder of a communist leader, in which both were arrested for and later released. Years later they “told stories” about how they brought him to Mexico to murder him.
Painter’s Life • Frida Kahlo painted many paintings from the time of her accident to her death. • She was world renowned for her paintings and had exhibitions all over the world, especially in New York and France. • They all loved her beauty and paintings. • She was even “wined and dined” by Picasso in France. • In Mexico, she had many great admirers.
Painter’s Life • She was always in physical pain because of her accident. She even had to have her leg amputated at one of exhibitions her exhibitions which she never missed. • This led her to be depressed and suicidal. • She died on July 13, 1954. • Suicide is rumored, because the last phrase in her diary was "I hope the leaving is joyful and I hope never to return“.
