Overview of Region 1’s Presentation for GIS Workgroup – May 2, 2012
R1 Staff Involved in Development of CAT • Alexandra Dichter(GIS Coordinator , CAT Project Mgt) • Sheryl Rosner(C3 Coordinator) • Tom Giffen(IT Section Chief – CAT Consulting) • Gordon Hamilton (GIS) • Phil Warren (IT – Designer) • Matt Hoagland (Strategic Planner) • Pui Ng (Programmer) • Liz Pucci(Interface Graphic Design)
Background Information:Communities Coordinating Committee “C3” Goals: • Aim to better serve community needs through focused integration and coordination among the multitude of EPA’s regional community-based programs. • Align regional work with HQ’s communities coordination efforts. • Improve communication about R1’s community-based programs. • Represent all regional programs by developing a more holistic and strategic approach to R1’s community-based work.
Prioritizing and leveraging EPA’s community investments • Stage 1–Use tools to identify communities with highest risk factors (e.g., R1 Healthy Communities). • Stage 2– Evaluate highest ranked communities in context of greatest potential to impact regional sustainability (leveraging DOT, HUD, DOL investments, etc.). • Stage 3– Gain situational awareness of EPA investments (use R1 Community Actions Tracker (CAT) to map investments and create linkages). • Stage 4– Maximize EPA investments and future impacts through improved internal communication and effective leveraging/networking with stakeholders and partners. • Stage 5–Tell the Story.
We’re building an integrated mapping, tracking and reporting platform to improve our understanding of EPA community investments: Partner in $4.2 million HUD Planning Grant Adopt a school lead in DW program OEP Pioneer Valley CSO Enforcement Targeting OES EJ Small Grant $20k Volunteer monitoring equipment loan - OEME Autobody Training OES Climate Showcase OEP $500k Energy Leaders Program for Water Sector OEP Care Grant 80k Level I OES plus $50k Brownfields Investigation Brownfields – 3 Cleanups/ $1 million assessment OSRR MS4 LID Rain Garden Training OES C-FERST Pilot ORD Community Energy Challenge OEP CAA FY10 Air Toxics Priority OES Green and Healthy Homes Training OEP
Provides better internal coordination, collaboration and information for EPA practitioners through quicker, more complete and higher quality data; • Optimize OEI investments in GeoPlatform and GeoGrants by layering regional applicability; • Helps optimize leveraging opportunities (allows us to see relevance of our activities to states, federal, ORD investments, etc.). • Instant issue spotter - gives leaders greater credibility when visiting communities. • Long-term resource saver – reduces IT burden maintaining hundreds of independent tracking and reporting systems; • Data-rich visual integrated platform will help us make smart, strategic investments in times of severely constrained resources.
CAT Integrates GeoGrants Code to Map Place-Based Activities (milestones)
Current Status / Next Steps • CAT just went live yesterday! • We’ll continue to work with interested groups who want to merge/create program tracking systems in CAT • Start working on Version 2 of CAT Map, leverage EPA’s GeoPlatform – We need your input! • Interest from Bob P, ORD, HUD, Regions 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 • Working to standardize CAT in an effort to make the tool available to the broader EPA community. OEI is supportive of CAT.
