  6. Introduction • Led Zeppelin was an English rock band that was formed in 1968 by Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bohnamand John Paul Jones. • Due to their heavy, guitar-driven sound, Led Zeppelin can be classified as one of the first Heavy Metal bands. • Nowadays, I would classify “Zep” as more of a hard rock band due to the huge difference in sound from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and metal music in our decade.

  7. The Differences Led Zeppelin – The Ocean Iron Maiden – The Trooper

  8. When did Led Zeppelin Climb the Stairway to Heaven? • Led Zeppelin was active for about 12 years up until the tragic death of drummer, John Bohnam on September 25, 1980. • However, in 1985, 1988, 1995 and 2007 Led Zeppelin performed several reunion concerts. • They reached their peak popularity between 1971-1977 being referred to as “the biggest band in the world”.

  9. What ever happened to Led Zeppelin? • Today, Led Zeppelin does not have a very strong influence compared to when they were in their heyday. • Typically, only other musicians will “get their Led out”. • Most fans of Led Zeppelin nowadays are older and would have been teenagers at the time of their popularity.

  10. Writing Style • Typically, Led Zeppelin would write incorporating their blues and folk roots. • However, other genre’s were incorporated into their music that gave them their distinct, unique sound. • These genre’s include: rockabilly, reggae, soul, funk, classical, Celtic, Psychedelic, Indian, Arabic, pop, Latin and country.

  11. Different Styles Blues Influence Folk Influence • “Since I’ve Been Lovin’ You” • “Over the Hills and Far Away”

  12. Different Styles Reggae Influence Latin Influence • “D’yerMak’er” • “Fool in the Rain”

  13. Different Styles Arabic Influence Funk Influence • “Kashmir” • “Trampled Under Foot”

  14. Different Styles Psychedelic Rockabilly Influence • “Dazed and Confused” • “Hot Dog”

  15. Elements of Music - Timbre • Typically, Led Zeppelin’s songs would consist of a guitar, bass guitar, drum kit and vocals. • However, sometimes Jimmy Page or John Bonham would have a solo piece. • Many other songs would also include a keyboard performance by John Paul Jones.

  16. Elements of Music - Form • Led Zeppelin’s song structure’s are just to diverse to list. • Typically, they would follow a standard 12-bar blues progression but other songs have complicated rhythms and many different time signatures.

  17. Elements of Music - Dynamics • Zep has it all, whether you’re looking for a soft easy listening piece or a kick-butt song that just makes you want to “get up and groove”. • They’re just so diverse!

  18. Elements of Music - Melody • Typically Robert Plant and Jimmy Page both create their melodies from the pentatonic scale. • This comes from their heavily blues based background.

  19. Elements of Music - Harmony • Most Led Zeppelin songs will follow a 12-bar blues chord progression. • Jimmy will also implement a lot of his acoustic playing into his work. (I personally think he is a much better acoustic player than electric.) • His acoustic work typically follows that of folk origins.

  20. Elements of Music - Rhythm • John Bohnam incorporated many different rhythm styles in his writing. • He was an excellent drummer and was very original.

  21. Elements of Music - Texture • Most often, homophony and/or polyphony was used in Zeppelin’s songs. • Very rarely would you hear a monophonic melody in one of their songs.

  22. What makes Led Zeppelin so special? • Led Zeppelin has to be the most musically diverse band I’ve ever listened to. • Their amazing musicianship and ridiculous ability to write incredible songs is just stupefying. • Continuing to influence the musicians of today, I think Led Zeppelin will still be listened to for decades to come.

  23. Interesting Facts • During their live performances, Led Zeppelin does extensive amounts of improvising. A random 20 minute guitar solo is not unheard of at a Zeppelin concert. • As a matter of fact, when performed live, the song “Dazed and Confused” has an additional 10 minutes tacked on to it’s time stamp because Jimmy Page decides to play around with a violin bow on his guitar.

  24. Interesting Facts • The appearance of the four symbols on their fourth album has been linked to Page’s interest in the Occult.

  25. Interesting Facts • During the song “Moby Dick”, John Bonham will throw away his drum sticks and play using his hands to give a very interesting sound.
