Build Strength on Campus this Fall • Increase our membership • Bargaining and Budget meetings • Bargaining Survey • Identify and involve new campus activists • Help Student Interns create network of student support for fight ahead • Begin planning campus actions for the contract and budget battles ahead

5. Budget Battle 2003-04 • Over the last two years the CSU’s budget was slashed by half a billion dollars. • Teaching and learning suffers as faculty, students, and staff carry the burden of the cuts. • Student fees have increased by 63% -- so far. • Classes have been cut back drastically. • Class size has increased dramatically. • Faculty & staff have lost jobs. • CSU faculty have had NO general salary increases for two years.

6. Impact of Budget Cuts • In California where the cost of living is the highest in the nation students are paying more and getting less • In California where the cost of living is the highest in the nation faculty are working more and earning less

7. The State Budget • The bad news: This year the state will have to confront the problems that were avoided in 2004-05. The budget battle for 2005-06 promises to be another life and death struggle. • The good news: In the last budget fight hard work by faculty students and staff saved $40 million of CSU funding. We must wage this battle again—stronger, smarter, faster.

12. HOW SUCCESSFUL WAS OUR CAMPAIGN? • Restored: $40 Million to the CSU Budget • Saved: Student Success programs - EOP • Protected: Student Financial Aid • Lowered: Graduate Student Fee increases

13. 2005-06 Budget Battle Phase One: Election 2004 • Voter Registration Drive • Elect legislators who will Rebuild the CSU • Educate campus about propositions on the ballot that affect the state budget – Propositions 72 and 66

Bargain a Contract that Rebuilds the CSU • Protect students and faculty from overcrowded class sections • Ensure that campuses provide adequate numbers of course sections to meet student need • Ensure that the CSU can attract and retain faculty to educate our students • Ensure that our students get the one-on-one time with faculty they need to succeed
